THE TRINITY HERALD
The mission of Trinity Church is to share the joy of God’s love with our community, our brothers and sisters in Christ. MARCH 2010
THE RECTOR’S COLUMN: FAITH, HOPE & LOVE In like a lion, and out like a lamb. Or, perhaps, the other way around — in like a lamb, and out like a lion? That’s how the old saying goes concerning the weather in the month of March. Believe it or not, I think these 2 almost diametrically‐ opposed views actually mean to express the exact same idea: that when March comes around, the weather will definitely be changing. There is no real option for it to stay the same and the transition will be obvious. If it’s cold and blustery early on in March, then it’s bound to be warmer later. However, if it’s cold and calm early on, then it’s sure to be warmer and stormy later. The part of the earth where we reside is waking up from a long winter’s slumber, and life is being renewed again for another year. By now, we can already see some of the tell‐tale signs that Spring is upon us. The greenery from daffodils are peeking out from the ground. In some places, you can see some leaves start to open up on plants and trees. It won’t be long and the grass will start growing again. Nature happens to provide us a wonderful example to follow in our own lives, in the changing of the seasons. It could be that, at some point or another, we discover our own spiritual attitudes have grown cold and dormant. We could feel as if we are frozen in place, waiting for something to “shake us up” and get us moving forward again. The season of Lent is intended to do just that. Lent is the perfect time to reevaluate our lives, to see what we can improve upon, to see how we can better orient ourselves to what God would have us do. For some people, this may involve “giving up” or “taking on” something important. Whenever people have asked me which one they should choose to do, I tell them that it doesn’t really matter. I don’t mean to sound flippant — and that what we do doesn’t matter — but what I intend to mean is that you should do whatever makes you feel closer to the Almighty. The simple act of giving up or taking on is, in itself, irrelevant. Us not consuming chocolate or steaks or whiskey for 40 days (or 46, if you count Sundays) can never equate to the sacrifices that Jesus made for us — being whipped, beaten, humiliated and executed. Neither will it somehow justify us, so that we can make ourselves worthy. On the other hand, if the self‐denial or added disciplines of Lent makes us better appreciate the many blessings we have been given as children of God, then you be sure that the trappings of the season are working like a charm. It’s great for us to enjoy some stability in our lives as Christians, but no matter what we think we want, our circumstances are always ulti‐ mately destined to change and we’ll have to deal with the consequences. We cannot be content to stay in one place forever in our faith. No, we should take a lesson from the month of March and strive to seek out renewal and growth.
