THE TRINITY HERALD
The mission of Trinity Church is to share the joy of God’s love with our community, our brothers and sisters in Christ. NOVEMBER 2009
THE RECTOR’S COLUMN: FAITH, HOPE & LOVE It may sound a little funny to say, but on Sunday mornings in Episcopal churches, people are supposed to gather around an altar to celebrate. I think it sounds funny because I see many people as they enter church and there are always a few who don’t look very joyful. (Maybe you think that about me sometimes too?) To the con‐ trary, I am sure there are plenty of people who arrive begrudgingly – and rather be anywhere else – or with heavy hearts or possibly even with anger or worry or other strong emotions. That’s all understandable. As human be‐ ings, we come as we are, and we all have different motivations and reasons for whatever we do. Some people may come to church because they “don’t know any better.” For example, I’ve had some peo‐ ple tell me that they come because they always have and it’s just what they do. It would feel strange for them not to be present. I’ve had other people tell me that their parents or spouse or somebody made them go. In other words, it was out of a sense of obligation these people came. They didn’t exactly make a willing choice, but they made a “sacrifice” of sorts. There are still other people who may be perfectly happy to be in church. Because they see friends they know and like to be around. Or, perhaps a good meal is served after the service – like the one Trinity’s vestry members organize? And finally (although I am sure we would never admit it) there are times when even clergy people are only in church because it is their jobs to be there! Hey, nobody’s perfect… Since November is often associated with its biggest holiday, Thanksgiving, I would like to propose a special challenge to us all this month. I would like to encourage us to do our best to view church for what it is intended to be: a celebration of thanksgiving. Celebrations are events that people eagerly and willingly attend – indeed, they even look forward to them with anticipation. Nobody is in such a rush to be done with celebrations, so they can get on to the next thing in their lives. Maybe you aren’t convinced that church is meant to happy and joyous? Consider for a moment what we call our service: the Holy Eucharist. The word “eucharist” isn’t a word we use very often – at least we think we don’t. It comes from the Greek language and is related to the words eu meaning “good” and cha‐ ris meaning “gifts.” (The verb eucharisteo in Greek means “to give thanks.”) Therefore, the Holy Eucharist is, in essence, the sacred process of thanksgiving. If you take my challenge seriously, then I guarantee other people will notice your offerings of thanksgiving and they will soon become more infectious than the swine flu – which is a good thing. (Either that, or we will easily identify all of the “truly nasty people” in the world who absolutely refuse to pass on the gratitude they experi‐ ence!) If you decide to take this challenge, then I would absolutely love to hear any ideas on how you might ex‐ press thankfulness in your own life. Who knows? Instead of simply being a discipline we accept for a month, maybe we will allow our hearts to be permanently changed with a great appreciation of all the gifts we have al‐ ready been given. Yours in Christ,
