FAITH, HOPE & LOVE I guess everybody has heard the expression “April showers bring May flowers.” The person that coined that expression must have surely been from the south, because any Alabamian knows that springtime often brings us rain and storms. The sky can get dark in a hurry, with clouds so thick and full of rainwater that they can make the day look just like night. Sometimes those heavy rains are accompanied by fierce winds and dazzling lightning and booming thunder. And if the weather gets particularly mean, hail will fall from the sky and mercilessly pelt everything left exposed. Some‐ times when the winds are strong enough, they can spin up into a tornado – destroying cars and homes and unfortunately even lives. I’ll admit I have always been fascinated with the weather. When I was little, I always wanted to be a meteorologist. Whenever stormy weather was in the forecast, I would stay glued to the television – watching to see where it was headed next. I re‐ member when I made a “weather forecaster” out of an old shoebox. I designed all sorts of instruments for it, using markers and colored paper: barometers, hygrometers, thermometers, and anemometers. It was the fanciful creation of a little child, pretend‐ ing to possess the power to predict the unpredictable. Now that I’m a little older, I have realized that “weather storms” are not the only types of storms we face in life. Sometimes, we encounter other types of storms – maybe we could call them “life storms?” Life storms are situations where many of the comfortable matters in our lives get turned completely upside down. Perhaps some‐ one we know gets sick, or has an accident, or dies? Perhaps someone close to us takes steps down the dark path of addiction and we feel powerless to help them? Perhaps these despairing events aren’t happening to someone else, but rather to us? What instruments do we have to predict these life storms? I am sorry to say that forecasting life storms is even more difficult than a meteorologist predicting the weather. We simply cannot know when we will experience these adverse life condi‐ tions. But the Good News is that just like the weather, we can prepare for life storms. Our relationship with God is kind of like a good weather radio. It can warn us to im‐ pending danger and give us the ability to take cover, to take shelter from the storm. Our faith in God may not keep us from encountering the travails of life, but it can surely help bring us through to safety.
