This week’s tip deals with eligibility for competition, specifically fulfillment of credit-hour requirements.
Billy Madison is a golf student-athlete at Radford University. Billy just finished the spring semester of his second year at RU and will thus be entering his third year of enrollment at RU in the fall. During his first year at RU, Billy earned 24 credits during the academic year and then earned 3 more credits the following summer. During his second year at RU, Billy earned 9 credits in the fall semester and 9 credits in the spring semester. Billy maintains a 3.0 GPA and has declared his major as psychology because he aspires to be an anger management specialist. Billy’s golf coach, Chubbs Peterson, has just learned that Billy, at the moment, would be academically ineligible for competition in the coming fall.
QUESTION Can you explain to Coach Chubbs why Billy would currently be academically ineligible for competition in the fall? What can Billy do to become eligible for fall competition?
ANSWER Billy has only earned a total of 45 credits (24 + 3 + 9 + 9). Although Billy has satisfied the requirement of 18 credits earned during the academic year as well as the requirement of 6 credits passed in the preceding term, Billy has not satisfied the 40% of degree requirement because he has earned only 45 credits, 3 short of the required 48. However, Billy can earn the 3 credits by taking a class during the summer and thus become eligible for competition in the fall. The chart below summarizes the academic requirements. Entering Second Year of Enrollment Entering Third Year of Enrollment
Entering Fourth Year of Enrollment Entering Fifth Year of Enrollment
