This week’s tip addresses contact restrictions during tournament competition.
Radford University’s softball coach and baseball coach are both going to tournaments to recruit. RU’s softball coach is going to see a pitcher named Amanda Whurlitzer. She is competing in a three-day tournament that runs Wednesday-Thursday-Friday. RU’s baseball coach is going to see a pitcher named Rudy Bonilla. He is playing in a tournament that runs Wednesday-ThursdaySaturday. Both players’ teams have made the championship game. Amanda’s team plays in the championship on Friday, and Rudy’s team plays in the championship on Saturday. Both coaches want to contact their respective recruits on Thursday after the players have been released by the appropriate institutional authority. Is recruiting contact with Amanda and Rudy permissible on Thursday after their releases?
ANSWER: Recruiting contact with Amanda is impermissible, but recruiting contact with Rudy is permissible. Bylaw 13.1.6.2(d) states that contact shall not be made with the PSA involved in competition that requires participation on consecutive days (e.g., a tournament) until after his or her final contest is completed and he or she is released by the appropriate institutional authority and leaves the dressing and meeting facility. Further, contact shall not be made with a PSA involved in a tournament that is not conducted on consecutive days until after his or her final contest is completed on a day before a break in the days of the tournament and he or she is released by the appropriate institutional authority and leaves the dressing and meeting facility. Thus, in this case, recruiting contact with Amanda is impermissible because her team’s tournament runs on consecutive days and contact cannot be made with her until her final contest is completed and she is released by the appropriate institutional authority. Recruiting contact with Rudy is permissible because there is a break in the days of the tournament as there are no tournament competitions on Friday. Thus, contact with Rudy would be permissible on Thursday, “a day before a break in the days of the tournament.” Note: If a prospect’s team has been eliminated from tournament competition, and the prospect has been released by the appropriate institutional authority and leaves the dressing or meeting facility, then recruiting contact with the PSA would be permissible.
