Transcribed Letter from Noyes Latham Avery1 (1815-1901) to his son John Morgan Avery2 (1847-1873) Postmarked Grand Rapids MI, December 26, 1863 John M. Avery Aurora Cayuga Co. NY Grand Rapids Dec 26/63 My Dear Boy Yours of Dec 21 was received this morning. We were glad to hear that were well & enjoying your Vacation so well. I hope you will try and improve a portion of your time in studying & reading some good Books. I see you spoke of cousin Richard3 – as Dick. I hope you will speak respectful of everyone. I was sorry to hear of Mr. Woodrufs4 Death – he was a very fine young man. I Knew Mr. [Humphry?] Howland5 – he was a very old man – and had lived near Aurora. Yesterday Thanksgiving Mother6 Fred7 & Myself were invited by Mrs. [Troop]8 to take dinner with her & Dwight Gilbert9. We had an excellent dinner & a good visit. We wished several times during the day that you were with us. I hope you will go down to James Averys10 so you can tell me just how he is. I feel very anxious about him. You can tell Mr. P[ ]11 that I will send him the balance of his Bill soon. We have no one to [preach] for us yet. We do miss Mr. Greely12 very much. I fear it will be a long time before we can get a man that will give so general satisfaction. Franky G13. Plays with Fred7 a good deal – he feels lonesome without his Father14 or Mother15. It has been raining hard all day. How did you like Cate Morgan16. You must give my love to all friends at Aurora when you can see them if they should enquire after me. I think you will soon get over all of your troubles if you follow the directions given to you. I hope you will avoid all the light reading such as love stories & Novels. Mother Fred & all join in love to you & Merry Christmas & happy new year. Good by From Father
