Electrical Outage of 6/10/2017
On Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 3:30PM, an outage affected all electric services in Ketchikan. This outage was caused by a fault on the power system when an eagle contacted the 34.5kV line. This contact occurred at 7.5 mile South Tongass Highway causing protective relaying to open the 34.5kV Mountain Point South Tie Breaker. This resulted in a sudden loss of generation, approximately 6 MW, causing system instability, resulting in a system-wide load-shed event. All KPU system feeders opened during the event causing a system-wide power outage. KPU operators quickly identified the issue and immediately began power restoration. The restoration process is handled step-by-step as it takes time to ensure system stability as each feeder in the system is closed. Initially all 7,649 customers were affected by the outage. Within 87 minutes, power was restored to all customers.
