1 VISION STATEMENT BY THE CAPE COAST SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF/BLIND
DISABILITY NOT INABILITY Delivered by Henrietta Arhin Date: 16 November 2015 Venue: Pempamsie Hotel, Cape Coast Mr. Chair, Distinguished guests, All protocols observed; The future means the time ahead, those moments yet to be experienced. A nation is a large group of people with strong bonds of common identity. It is said, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). A vision gives clarity and direction to a nation. VISION STATEMENT Our vision is of a future where children with special educational needs have equal access to education, employment, and health care to prepare us holistically to become useful national assets to move the nation ahead in its socio-economic development. Education Ensuring that the learning environment is safe and friendly, where all gutters shall be covered for the students with visual impairment, and physically challenged people have easy access. Ensuring that textbooks and other reading materials are in Braille for students with visual impairment and providing the requisite materials for vocational departments for the disabled. Establishing more inclusive senior high schools for students with visual impairment. Establishing inclusive basic schools and senior high schools for students with hearing impairment to avoid sending all students with hearing impairment who qualify for admission into SHS to only one, in Ghana – the Akuapem Mampong SHS.
2 Employment Ensuring that qualified applicants with disabilities are offered employment and are not discriminated against. Healthcare Ensuring provision of facilities for early identification and intervention for individuals with disabilities. Sign language courses should be included in the curriculum of all institutions of health to enable them to communicate effectively with hearing impaired students. We hope our vision will be considered as it will go a long way to nurture the future that we want as a nation. Thank you.
