Volleyball Hosts Two Lone Star Conference Opponents

The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team will close out its regulation-season home schedule Friday and Saturday when it hosts Lone Star Conference cohorts Texas-Permian Basin and West Texas A&M in the Steinke Center. The UTPB Friday match is set for 7 p.m. and the Javelinas take on West Texas at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Javelinas were 9-6 in the LSC and 17-10 for the year going into a Tuesday night match with Angelo State in San Angelo. Alexis Wick, 6-2 senior middle blocker from Leander (Rouse), leads the Javelina attack with a .311 percentage.
Haley Hutchinson, 6-1 junior middle blocker from Georgetown (Rouse), has a .309 attack percentage and averages 0.98 blocks a set. Casey Klobedans, 5-10 senior setter from Boerne (Champion), averages 9.82 sets and Jasmine Jacinto, 5-4 freshman libero from San Antonio (Antonian), averages 4.04 digs. Madison Brabham, 5-11 junior hitter from Kingwood, averages 2.81 kills a set. Texas-Permian Basin had a Tuesday night matchup with Eastern New Mexico and had a 421 season’s record and 1-15 LSC
Football Returns to New Mexico Saturday
The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team will make its final road trip when it travels to Silver City, N.M., this weekend for a Lone Star Conference clash with Western New Mexico. Kickoff time will be 1 p.m. (CDT). This will be the second consecutive week for the Javelinas to play in New Mexico. They faced Eastern New Mexico last weekend in Portales. The Javelinas will be playing in Silver City for the first time. The two previous meetings with Western, both won by the Javelinas, were played Kingsville. The Javelinas take a 3-6 season’s record and 2-5 LSC mark into this week’s game. The team is averaging 405.3 total yards a game, 139.3 rushing and 266 passing.
The defense has given up 380.9 total yards an outing, 128.6 rushing and 252.3 passing. Nick Pelrean, 5-9, 185-pound junior running back from Houston (Chavez), leads the Javelina rushing attack with 87 yards a game and 6.8 yards an attempt. He has six rushing touchdowns. Cade Dyal, 5-11, 195-pound freshman quarterback from Kerrville, has completed 151 of 249 (.606) passes for 182.2 yards a game. He has thrown for 15 touchdowns and has had eight intercepted. Jordan Thomas, 6-0, 165pound senior wideout from San Antonio (Stevens), has 51 receptions for 921 yards and eight touchdowns. Trevor Moses, 6-0, 200pound senior linebacker from Corpus Christi (Calallen), tops the
tackle chart with 59 and Peyton Tilley, 6-2, 210-pound senior linebacker from Leander, has 58. Brandon Jones, 6-3, 250pound junior defensive end from Houston (Nimitz), has 10 tackles for losses and Caleb Valentine, 61, 220-pound sophomore linebacker from Fulshear (Seven Lakes), has 5.5 sacks. Western is 2-7 for the year and 1-5 in the LSC. The Mustangs are averaging 388.9 total yards a game, 86.8 rushing and 302.1 passing. Defensively, they have allowed 383.8 total yards a game, 146.1 rushing and 257.7 passing. Men’s Basketball To Meet TAMUCC in Thursday Exhibition Game The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team will play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in an exhibition game Thursday in Corpus Christi. Tipoff time will be 7 p.m. in the American Bank Center. The Javelinas played the U.S. Navy All-Stars in an exhibition last week in Kingsville and outscored the opponent, 69-60. The Javelinas open their regulation season Nov. 10 against South Dakota Mines in Kingsville.

Jordan Thomas (6), 6-0, 165pound senior wideout from San Antonio (Stevens), tied the school record with 212 receiving yards in last weekend’s game with Eastern New Mexico. He had 11 receptions, one off the school mark.

THREE SENIOR MEMBERS of the Javelina volleyball team will recognized on Senior Day Saturday in the Steinke Center. The Javelinas will host West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. in the home finale. The three seniors are Krystal Faison, Casey Klobedans and Alexis Wick. Faison, outside hitter from San Antonio (Judson), is a threeyear letterwinner with the Javelinas as is Klobedans, setter from Boerne (Champion). Wick, middle blocker from Leander (Rouse), has been with the Javelinas the past two years and is also a member of the beach volleyball squad. SIX MEMBERS OF the Javelina men’s and women’s cross country teams are in their final seasons this fall. Four of the seniors are on the men’s rosters: …Daniel Guerrero from Corpus Christi (Moody). …Elias Madrid, three-year letterman from Evans, Ga.. …Francisco Solis, three-year letterman from Corpus Christi (Miller). …Shane Stehle, three-year letterman from Orange Grove. The seniors on the women’s roster are Chelsea Gonzalez, threeyear letterwinner from Corpus Christi (Carroll), and Mariah Noyola, three-year letterwinner from Harlingen (South).
THE JAVELINA BASEBALL team will hold its second fall scrimmage at 2 p.m. Friday. The Javelinas will host Coastal Bend College at Nolan Ryan Field. The squad scrimmaged Laredo College last weekend. The softball team will be in San Antonio for a pair of scrimmages Saturday. The Javelinas take on Navarro College at 12:30 p.m. and Texas State at 3 p.m. The softball team hosted Coastal Bend in a scrimmage doubleheader last weekend at Hubert Field.
FOUR JAVELINA ATHLETES were initiated into Phi Kappa Phi honor society last week in the Memorial Student Union Building ballroom. The athletes are Austin Alford, track and field participant from Ganado; Payton Geisinger, baseball player from Wichita Falls; Seth Hubert, baseball player from Riviera, and Brittney Rodriguez, golfer from Corpus Christi (Moody). Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective alldiscipline honor society. The society’s mission is to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.

27 Games Set for LSC/RMAC Challenge Twenty-seven games are scheduled in the Lone Star Conference/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Challenge Nov. 10-12. The Challenge will see men’s and women’s teams from the two leagues pitted against each other. Texas A&M-Kingsville’s men’s and women’s teams will be involved, the men hosting two games and the women traveling to South Dakota and Nebraska for action. The Javelina men will host South Dakota Mines on Nov. 10 and Chadron (Neb.) State will visit Nov. 11. The Javelina women will be at Black Hills (S.D.) State Nov. 10 and at Chadron State Nov. 11. THE JAVELINA FOOTBALL played in Eastern New Mexico’s new on-campus Greyhound Stadium for the first time last weekend. The facility was opened in 2016. The Hounds had played home games in the stadium at Blackwater Draw for years before moving to the new field. It has a capacity of 4,000. There has been a move in the Lone Star Conference for teams to construct on-campus stadiums. Angelo State moved a couple of blocks from its old home to an on-campus field several years ago and West Texas A&M has plans to do the same.
NCAA DIVISIOIN II schools raised more than $634,000 for Make-A-Wish during the 2016-17 school year. It is the most ever raised by the DII programs. Since the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee established the partnership with Make-A-Wish in 2003, the division has raised more than $5.3 million for the organization. The funds are used to grant wishes to more than 660 youngsters across the country with life-threatening medical conditions. More than 81 percent of the Division II schools participated in raising the money. More than 250 schools from all 24 Division II conferences participated including 100 percent participation from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, Heartland Conference and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. PSAC was the top fundraising conference with $70,210. Among the schools, North Georgia raised the most with $26,000. SAAC adopted a model two years ago in which money collected from championship and enforcement fines are added to institutional fundraising in order for institutions to have the opportunity to host a wish reveal party on campus. In 2016-17, eight schools raised more than $10,000 and earned a wish reveal party. One Lone Star Conference school was among the top 30 in the amount raised for Make-A-Wish during the past school year. Texas A&M-Commerce raised $7,090.81 and ranked 14th among all institutions in the division. Lubbock Christian, a future member of the LSC, raised $8,000 and was 12th. The LSC ranked 11th among the 24 conferences in the amount raised. The league schools raised $19,776.00. LYNN (FLA.) HAS announced that it will add men’s cross country and track and field to its athletic program. (Continued on Page 4)

He has thrown for 19 touchdowns and has had 11 picked off. D’Angelo Bowie, 5-11, 180pound senior wideout from Virginia Beach, Va., has 50 receptions for 683 yards and six touchdowns. With the addition of Embry-Riddle and Palm Beach Atlantic as members of the Sunshine State conference this year, Lynn becomes the eighth school with men’s track and field and ninth with men’s cross country. The others with the programs are Florida Southern, Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Saint Leo and Tampa. All are in Florida.
LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes: …Kevin Blaskowski has resigned as head softball coach at West Texas A&M. He said he will pursue a business opportunity. Blaskowski restarted the WTAM softball program in 2006 after a 24year absence and he has a 467-246 record in the 12 seasons since. The Lady Buffs have won five Lone Star Conference titles, a national championship and been in the College World Series twice. …Abilene Christian has announced the creation of the First Down Club, a fundraising initiative to aid in raising money for the Football Excellence Fund. The initiative is part of a solution to help decrease the difference left by the football program operating at $250,000 below the media budget of the Southland Conference. Anyone who gives $100 or more annually to a sport is considered a part of the Wildcat Club. To qualify for the First Down Club, a booster must donate $1,000 or more to the Fund. The initiative breaks up into five different levels and offers new perks based on the amount given each year. ACU is a former member of the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II. NCAA DIVISION II notes: …The NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct recognized six athletes who will receive the 2016-17 NCAA Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Awards. One is from an NCAA Division II school. Pablo Jara is a soccer player and sport management major at Wingate (N.C.). Jara celebrates the talent of his competitors before he enjoys his own team’s victory. During the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division II soccer tournament, he made Wingate’s penalty kick to advance the Bulldogs to the regional semifinals. Immediately after, he approached Lander’s goalkeeper to congratulate him on a match well played. Jara made the game-winning play but praising his opponent’s talent and competitiveness remained his top priority. …Illinois-Springfield has announced it is proceeding with plans for an indoor athletic facility. The field house will become the first of its kind in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. It will accommodate a six-lane rubber track and areas for pole vault, long jump, triple jump and throws. There will be a turf infield, baseball and softball hitting tunnels, golf hitting and training area and multi-purpose flooring to accommodate tennis, volleyball and basketball. The structure will be 92,000 square feet.

Cross Country Teams Head to Regionals The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s and women’s cross country teams will enter the NCAA Division II South Central Region Championships Saturday in Canyon. The women’s 6K race is set for 9:30 a.m. on the West Texas A&M campus course. The men’s 10K race will start at 10:45 a.m. The South Central Region is one of the strongest in NCAA division. In the last regular-season national poll, the Colorado Mines and Adams (Colo.) State men’s teams were ranked first and third. Western (Colo.) State was No. 12, Colorado State-Pueblo No. 14, Rogers (Okla.) State No. 21 and Dallas Baptist No. 25. All but Rogers State and DBU are in the Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference. Rogers and DBU are in the Heartland Conference and will join the Lone Star Conference beginning in 2019-20. In the women’s national standings, Adams was No. 3, Colorado Mines No. 11, Dallas Baptist No. 13, Colorado-Colorado Springs No. 19 and Western State No. 24. All are in the RMAC but DBU.
Javelina men’s entry Jose Ventura, sophomore from San Antonio (O’Connor), finished fourth in the LSC meet this fall and made the All-LSC team. Daniel Guerrero, junior from Corpus Christi (Moody), was No. 11 and was also all-conference. The top team and individual finishers in the regional meet will earn spots in the NCAA Division II Championships Nov. 18 in Evansville, Ind.

Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball player Krystal Faison and Javelina football player Jordan Thomas were named the IBC Bank athletes of the week for their performances last weekend. Faison, 5-7 senior outside hitter from San Antonio (Judson), had 23 kills, 30 digs and five blocked shots in games with Texas Woman’s and Texas A&M-Commerce. She had a .242 attack percentage against TWU and .125 in the Commerce match. Thomas, 6-0, 185-pound senior wideout from San Antonio (Stevens), had 11 receptions for 212 yards and a touchdown. His 212 receiving yards tied the school record, set by Gary Lusk in 2002. His 11 receptions missed the school mark by one. It is the third time Faison has been recognized as athlete of the week and Jordan has been recognized twice.

The LSC head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives made the selections. Defending champion TexasPermian Basin is the choice to repeat and received 269 points and 19 first-place votes. West Texas A&M was the choice for second with 234 points and five first-place votes, Tarleton State was tagged third with 231 points and three first-place votes and Midwestern State was picked fourth with 168 points and one first-place vote. The Javelinas had 150 points for fifth and Angelo State was two points behind with 148 points. Texas A&M-Commerce was picked seventh with 117 points, Cameron eighth with 110 points, Eastern New Mexico ninth with 84 points and Western New Mexico 10th with 29 points. Daeshon Francis, TexasPermian Basin All-American, was selected as the preseason player of the year with 21 of the 28 votes. The 6-4 senior guard from Indianapolis, Ind., averaged 18.2 points and 6.6 rebounds a game last season. The team finishing first in the regular-season final standings will be the conference champion. The top eight teams in the final standings will advance into the conference postseason tournament March 1-4 in the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco. The tournament champion receives the LSC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Women’s Basketball No. 8 The Texas A&M-Kingsville women have been picked to finish eighth in a Lone Star Conference preseason basketball poll announced last week. The LSC head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives voted in the poll. West Texas A&M, last year’s regional champion, was the choice for first with 11 first-place votes and 301 points. Eastern New Mexico was the pick for second with seven firstplace votes and 280 points. Tarleton State had 270 points and three first-place votes, Angelo State was selected fourth with 267 points and 267 points and Texas A&M-Commerce had six firstplace votes and 260 points. Texas Woman’s was tagged
sixth with 172 points, Cameron seventh with 145 points, the Javelinas eighth with 121 points, Midwestern State ninth with 120 points, Texas-Permian Basin 10th with 63 points and Western New Mexico 11th with 47 points. Mackenzie Hailey of Tarleton was selected as the preseason player of the year, receiving 15 of the 31 votes. A sophomore forward from Burleson, she averaged 16.1 points and 8.4 rebounds a game last season. The regular-season winner will be the LSC champion . The top eight teams advance into the LSC postseason tournament and the winner will receive the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
