vs. Haverford April 29, 2017 Senior Day Take ALS Yard Day

Report 0 Downloads 45 Views
Game Notes FIRST PITCH The Bullets wrap up the regular season this afternoon as they take on the Haverford College Fords in a Centennial Conference doubleheader consisting of two nine-inning games. ALL-TIME SERIES Haverford holds a 30-20 lead in the all-time series that started in 1994. The Fords have captured the last six meetings. SENIOR DAY Gettysburg will hold a brief ceremony before the start of today’s doubleheader to honor the team’s eight seniors, who are competing in their final regular-season home games this afternoon. PROJECT ALS DAY Between games this afternoon, Gettysburg will hold a “Take ALS Yard Day” ceremony in support of Project ALS, a support group dedicated to raising funds for research and awareness of this disease. The initiative is held on behalf of the families of Tom Kirchhoff and Robert Borman, friends of the Gettysburg College baseball program who passed away after battling ALS. Kirchhoff, who passed away in March of 2015 after a four-year battle with ALS, was the son of Bill ’63 and Jean Kirchhoff ’64. The family has been a generous supporter of the baseball team, and Gettysburg’s home field is named after them. Borman, the father of former Gettysburg baseball player Rob Borman ’05, passed away in October of 2014 after a year-long fight with ALS. The Borman family has also been a generous supporter of the baseball team and is recognized with a plaque outside the visiting team bullpen here at Kirchhoff Field. Three years ago, former Bullet captain Nate Simon ’14 started the team’s “Take ALS Yard” fundraiser, which has raised over $50,000 and is now organized by senior J.J. Lucido. The team has sold hats and tee-shirts throughout the year at the table next to the home bleachers, and donations are also accepted online at takealsyard.com.

striking out two. Senior Connor Tom finished 3-for-4 at the plate for the Bullets while classmate Will Anderson was 2-for-4. Junior Chuck Probst supplied all the offense Stopyra would need when he blasted a solo home run to leftfield on the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning. It was the team-leading sixth long ball of the season for Probst, who broke the single-season school record for total bases with 104. He surpassed the former mark of 101 set by Al Posch ’14 in 2013. LAST SEASON VERSUS HAVERFORD The Fords swept the Bullets in Haverford a year ago, winning 26-2 and 9-3. In the first game, the Fords slugged four home runs, including two grand slams in a 16-run eighth inning. Zach Taylor led Haverford at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with four runs and five RBIs. Shawn Moffitt ’16 paced the Bullets offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double. In the second game, the Bullets jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, only to see Haverford rally with nine unanswered runs. Ben Furlong went 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, and a home run to lead the Fords while Jonny Bray struck out eight and allowed just one run over 3 1/3 innings of relief for Gettysburg. SCOUTING THE FORDS  Entering Friday, Haverford had won four of its last five games, including a 13-3 win at Swarthmore on Wednesday, when it outscored the Garnet 11-1 over the last three innings. Sophomores Ethan Lee-Tyson and Jared Turner cracked three hits apiece while Lee-Tyson, junior Matt Goss, and junior Ben Furlong each homered. Sophomore Tom Phillips allowed just two runs over 7 2/3 innings to earn the win.  For the season, Lee-Tyson has been the team’s leading hitter, batting .392 and slugging seven home runs. Sam Partee has hit .367 and cracked seven homers.  Senior Jared Deveau has gone 3-2 with a 1.69 ERA to lead the pitching staff while freshmen Brandon Jenkins (2-0, 1.99 ERA) and Dylan Livingston (4-1, 3.43 ERA) have also pitched well.

LAST TIME OUT Senior Chase Stopyra registered another outstanding pitching performance, tossing eight scoreless innings as the Bullets blanked McDaniel 6-0 in a Centennial Conference game Wednesday afternoon here at Kirchhoff Field. Stopyra scattered five hits, walked none, and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts. It was the fourth time this season that he worked at least eight innings while allowing no more than one run. Senior Aaron Bezio helped nail down Gettysburg’s sixth shutout of the season, firing a three-up, three-down ninth while
