Dear Raider Nation, It is difficult to describe the last three weeks since I wrote to you last. The emotions on campus have stretched across a broad spectrum, and we are all doing our best to pick up the pieces from the recent tragedy of losing two of our firstyear Raiders much too soon. My love for Colgate, our community, our faculty and staff, alumni and our studentathletes keeps growing even when I didn't think it was possible! This past weekend, head coach Art McKinnon, his staff and the track and field team were in Bridgeport, Conn., honoring their fallen teammate, Carey Depuy. Former Colgate football player and my classmate, Nick Verbitsky '91, was in attendance and had these words for me: "I just wanted to let you know that I've seldom been more proud of Colgate than I was today, and the T&F coach deserves a big round of applause for showing his kids what a team is all about." Win or lose, I am so proud of our coaches and studentathletes, who have shown so much support and love in a time of incredible grief. We celebrated Homecoming three weeks ago and the amount of work across campus and by the President's Club was impressive, to say the least. The concerted effort to bring in incredible speakers, build the biggest bonfire I've ever seen, organize live bands, build "tent city," celebrate our Hall of Honor inductees and host a record number of alumni that returned to Hamilton, N.Y., on Homecoming weekend was awe inspiring! Please catch a glimpse of homecoming in our video. Please click HERE This past weekend our football team, with the initials of our fallen firstyear students on their helmets, won their opening Patriot League game by defeating Holy Cross in Worcester, 31 14. Our men's soccer team opened the Patriot League season by hosting and defeating #19 American on BeyerSmall '76 Field! Women's soccer remains undefeated in the league after defeating American and drawing with Lehigh. Volleyball came out of a League weekend and split with a loss to Army and a win over Holy Cross, improving to 21 for the season. We also celebrated the volleyball jersey retirement of two incredible Raiders: Autumn McKenzie (Jackson) '97 and Judy Culhane Faubert '00 ... well, so I thought! Apparently, all of Colgate is able to keep a secret as I did not find out that my jersey also would be retired until I was ready to present Autumn and Judy with their jerseys. I did not think it would be appropriate for me to receive this honor while being the AD and got my staff to agree ... hmmm. Autumn, Judy and I would like to thank our families, friends, faculty, staff, community and students (all with incredibly busy lives), for traveling near and far to be with us. I am touched beyond belief by our athletics staff that organized this event and impressed by their ability to pull off the "best kept secret" in America! As always, thank you for your generous support of the Colgate Athletic Council and Raiders for Excellence.
A very humbled Vicky @Vchun
Photo 1: Future President Dr. Brian Casey visited with our head coaches three weeks ago. Words used to describe President Casey are smart, passionate, servant leader, supportive and positive. Yes, I got this all in 45 minutes! He made an immediate impact. Photo 2: Welcome to our "first ever" Homecoming Tent City. Imagine Reunion but with more tents. Thank you Tim Mansfield and Kate Hollerbush '09 for taking the lead on this. #IfYouBuildItTheyWillCome Photo 3: On the Thursday before Homecoming Weekend, the President's Club sponsored a BBQ on the quad and brought in an inspiring speaker. This year's chapelfilled event featured Adonal Foyle '99, author, poet and former Raider studentathlete and NBA player. It was a treat to have our head men's basketball coach, Matt Langel, interview Adonal "60 Minutes" style. Please click HERE to view the video of Adonal's speech and Q&A with Coach Langel. Photo 4: Our 2015 Hall of Honor Inductees (and their families) being recognized at our football game during halftime. Photo 5: A "CUselfie" with many of the Raider volleyball alumni & coaches in attendance for the volleyball jersey ceremony. No one had a lens wide enough to include our families, children and friends, as we were outnumbered by A LOT!
