The Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference The Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference was established in 1991. Charter members of the conference include SUNY Brockport, SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Oswego and Rochester Institute of Technology. In 2007, Lycoming College and Messiah College joined the conference. Morrisville became the most recent and ninth member of the conference in 2010. The ECWC has experienced a great deal of success at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. The

conference has produced 18 individual national champions, while two team titles have been captured by conference members. SUNY Brockport claimed the team title in 1992 while Ithaca College won the national championship in 1994.

Oswego State’s commitment to serving the well-being and readiness of its student-athletes extends from the classroom to the quality of athletic facilities. Laker Hall, which was built in 1968, serves as the Lakers’ primary indoor facility and is home to the Oswego State Athletic Department.

Head Coach Mike Howard With the success achieved by the Laker Wrestling program over the last 21 years, head coach Mike Howard has made a name for himself in collegiate wrestling. After an outstanding 1996 season, Howard was voted the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference’s Coach of the Year for the first time in his career, and an honor he again received in 2002. His wrestlers have been named the ECWC’s Most Outstanding Wrestlers in 1993, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001. He has posted a 129-200-5 dual meet record in his 21 years at the Laker helm with the program ranked in the top 25 of Division III in nine of the last 14 years. At the 2002 NCAA Division III Championships, Howard guided the Lakers to a ninth-place finish in the team standings with three All-Americans. During his tenure, Oswego State has finished in the top twenty at the national tournament on two other occasions, 1996 and 2005. In 1996, Howard sent his largest contingent to the NCAA Championships after six of the Laker matmen qualified at the ECWC Championships. Two returned with All-American honors for their mantles while the team placed 20th overall in NCAA Division III. Howard strives to carry on a storied Laker wrestling tradition that has seen 33 wrestlers earn 46 All-America status, three NCAA individual champions, 90 individual conference champions and 11 grapplers inducted into the Oswego State Athletic Hall of Fame. As a competitor, Howard wrestled for the Lakers for three years at the 167 pound weight class. He began his collegiate career at the University at Buffalo, after becoming the first Oswego High School grappler to capture a Section III individual title. During his career, Howard guided the Lakers as a two-time co-captain. After graduating with a BA in Historical Studies and a minor in Athletic Coaching, Howard remained involved with the program as an assistant under his father, Jim, for three seasons before taking over the reigns in 1989. Howard also serves as the men’s golf coach at Oswego State.

2009-2010 Season in Review Lakers Place 5th At ECWC Championships The wrestling squad recorded several team and individual successes throughout the course of the season, including a fifth-place finish at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championship and placing tenth at the NY State Championships. Senior Eric Leusch finished the season with over 20 wins in the 285-pound weight class as he captured third place at the ECWC Championships and seventh at the NY State Championships. A trio of wrestlers garnered fourth-place honors at the ECWC Championships, including junior Brandon Heffernan at 141 pounds, sophomore Blake Fisher at 149 pounds, and junior Marc Collins at 165 pounds.

Marc Collins took fourth place in the 165-pound weight class at the 2010 ECWC Championships.
