Eagle Headlines HOME BEFORE LONG: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team continues its trek through the 2009-10 season on the road Thursday, Nov. 19, with a 7 p.m. meeting with the Vikings of Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. Last season, the Eagles rolled to a 31-10 victory over the Vikings, Jan. 11, 2008, at Bowen Field House, to claim their second straight win over their non-conference foe in as many seasons. On Sunday, Nov. 22, the Eagles return to Bowen for their first home dual of the season, when they entertain the Wildcats of Northwestern University at 2 p.m. The Green and White will look for revenge against the Wildcats, who handed EMU a 23-13 setback at the Boilermaker Challenge, Nov. 15. NO WORSE FOR THE WEAR: The dual season officially kicked-off for the Eagles Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Northwestern Duals. EMU bounced-back from an opening bout setback against the University of Northern Iowa, 22-12, to edge St. Could State University, 25-24. The day was highlighted by David Wade and Corey Phillips, who both defeated nationally ranked opponents. Wade earned a 1-0 shutout over No. 11 ranked Christian Brantley of UNI in the heavyweight bout. Phillips pulled off an 13-11 shootout win over UNI’s Trent Washington at 141 lbs.

Additionally, freshman Alex Ortman made his debut as an EMU starter against Jarion Beets of UNI. Ortman put up seven points but lost the match, 15-7. “Overall, I was pleased with our performance,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “Even though we lost the first match I felt it was a good start to the dual season. We beat two ranked guys against NIU and persevered and made our own breaks to win the second dual.” STRONG SHOWING AT MSU OPEN: EMU once again posted several impressive performances in unattached competition, as eight Eagles earned sixth place or better in their respective weight classes at the Michigan State Open Sunday, Nov. 15. True freshmen Mike LeHolm and Nick Whitenburg each claimed first place honors, with LeHolm going 5-0 at 141 lbs. of the freshman and sophomore division, and Whitenburg going 3-0 at 184 lbs. of the same division.
