BIGGEST LITTLE CITY: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will close out 2009 on the road at the Reno Tournament of Champions Sunday, Dec. 20, in Reno, Nev. Thirteen EMU grapplers will make the trip, 10 of which will contribute to team scoring. The event will feature over two dozen college teams and numerous high school squads.

YEAR-END SHAKEUP: Sunday’s trek to Reno carries major implications for the shape of the EMU starting lineup for the remainder of the season. As Head Coach Derek DelPorto explains, hard work will pay off for those wrestlers who earn it. “We are bringing 13 wrestlers in order to find which 10 want to be the starters for the remainder of the year,” DelPorto said. “We have been telling our guys that this tournament gives them a chance to make a name for themselves. Hopefully they have all embraced this opportunity and they will be rewarded for their hard work.” GO WEST: EMU’s last trip to “The Silver State” was Dec. 2, 2006, when it participated in the Cliff Key Invitational in Primm, Nev. Other recent western swings for the Eagles include trips to Colorado in the 2006-07 campaign and Texas in 2007-08. F.I.T.E. DUALS REVISITED: After a 29-6 opening round setback against Indiana University, EMU took out its frustrations on the University of Southern Illinois to the tune of a 37-6 romp at the F.I.T.E. Duals Saturday, Dec. 12. True freshman Phillip Joseph led the way with a pair of wins at 184 lbs.
