Eagle Headlines 2013 STARTS OFF ON TORRID PACE!: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team returns to action after a two-week hiatus Saturday, Dec. 12, with a road tilt at Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pa. The Eagles (4-6; 0-1 MAC) remain in the Quaker State for a three-match showdown with Lock Haven, No. 15 Pittsburgh and Bloomsburg at the Pitt Duals Sunday, Jan. 13. Action at Seton Hill begins at 5 p.m., while the Pitt Duals get underway against Lock Haven at 10 a.m. Subsequent matches against Pittsburgh and Bloomsburg will begin five minutes after the previous match has concluded. EAGLES AND GRIFFINS READY TO RUMBLE: Eastern Michigan has fond memories of its last tussle with Seton Hill all the way back in the 2009-10 season, when the squad cruised to a 30-9 victory in Greensburg, Pa. The Griffins got on the scoreboard first, but the Eagles ran away with seven of the final nine matches. This year the Division II team enters the contest holding a 4-3 record. SCOUTING THE FIELD AT PITT: When the Eagles meet up with the No. 12-ranked Panthers (4-2; 1-0 Big East) and No. 24-ranked Huskies (8-2) Sunday, Jan. 16, it will mark the fourth and fifth times this season that EMU will grapple with a nationally-ranked opponent. The Green and White holds a 1-2 record against top-25 teams this year, having defeated No. 24 North Dakota State and lost to No. 2 Minnesota and No. 14 Michigan. The Eagles will also take on Lock Haven (2-2) to open Sunday’s events. The last time EMU and Pitt did battle was at the 2012 Pitt Duals, Jan. 7, when the Panthers outlasted the Eagles, 22-15. Current Eagles Aaron Sulzer and Khodor Hoballah along with 2012 graduates Corey Phillips and Wes Schroeder each earned victories in the contest. GETTING THE BAND BACK TOGETHER: Injuries have plagued the Eagles for much of the first half of the 2012-13 season. As Head Coach Derek DelPorto notes, “we have not had our 10 starters out on the mat at the same time during a dual meet yet.” That could all change this weekend at Seton Hill, Jan. 12, and the Pitt Duals, Jan. 13, DelPorto has added redshirt sophomore Jaylyn Bohl (157 lbs.) and redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg (197 lbs.) to his list of probable starters. Both grapplers have postseason experience and look to lift the Eagles back above the .500 mark on the year.
LEARN FROM IT: EMU’s rash of injuries have perhaps hindered the team in the standings, but it has arguably provided a valuable lesson for every studentathlete on the team. “We need to treat every match in every dual as an individual competition and not get caught up in the team score,” said Coach Derek DelPorto. “The match against Indiana really drove the point home that we need to constantly be trying to score more points in the individual matches. When the goal is to score as many points as possible in every match, the results are usually positive.” A bonus point (major decision, technical fall or pin) against Indiana, Dec. 16, would have broken an 18-18 tie and given the Eagles the outright victory. GERMAINE COMES CLOSE AT MIDLANDS: Redshirt junior wrestler Jared Germaine was the lone EMU wrestler out of 12 to make it to the final day of the two-day Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., Dec. 29-30. After dropping his opening bout, Germaine rattled off four straight victories at 125 lbs. to earn his spot in the quarterfinal of the consolation bracket. He would go on to lose that match to top-seeded Anthony Zanetta, but managed to finish one of the nation’s most prestigious regular-season events with a 4-2 ledger. As a team, the Eagles finished in 30th place out of 48 teams with 14.5 points. Illinois won the tournament with an overall score of 99.5. WHITENBURG MAKES HIS RETURN: After being sidelined with an injury since the EMU Open, redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg returned to the mat for the 50th-annual Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30. The Temperance, Mich. native won two matches by decision including one over Maryland’s Christian Boley, who was ranked eighth in the tournament’s 197 lbs. weight class. PLENTY OF HOME ACTION IN 2013: EMU wrestling fans are encouraged to come out to Bowen Field House to support the Eagles at the three remaining home matches of the 2012-13 season. On Wednesday, Jan. 16, the Eagles host Olivet at 7 p.m. Then, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m., nationally-ranked Kent State invades Ypsilanti for the Eagles’ lone home MAC match of the season. Eastern Michigan closes out the regular season taking on Iowa State, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. The Cyclones are one of three new universities joining the MAC as a full-time member in the sport of wrestling for the 2013-14 campaign.
