YES Announcements September 14, 2017 The mission of Yorktown Elementary, working in partnership with all stakeholders, is to educate all students in order to achieve personal and academic excellence in an ever-changing world. Hat Day – Donations from 9-1-17 and 9-8-17 yielded a total of $1,210. Way to go YES! All donations from this fundraiser were sent to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Mum Distribution – Parents will pick up their children’s sold mums on Saturday, September 16th from 10:00 – 2:00 pm. Due to the sheer size of the mums, please have cars completely clear so that you may fit in all of your purchases. The pick-up process will work as follows: - Enter the YES staff parking lot from St. Rd. 32 by the playground. - A volunteer will be standing at the first stop, where you will receive a list of mums needed to be loaded into your vehicle. We are doing a “drive-by” loading of the mums. Parents will stop at each mum color station to pick up the number of that color of mum needed. Please stay in your car to facilitate the flow of traffic. - After all of your mums are loaded, make a right turn to the car pick-up/drop-off site at YES (between YES and the QuadMed Clinic). - Turn left and exit onto Highway 32. Mum Totals and Top Sellers – Total sales of mums provided a profit of $14,500 to be utilized to expand/upgrade our Library. Sales of this year topped last year by $1,300. The top three sellers of mums are as follows: - 1st Charity Perry with a total of 175 mums sold. She will receive a $50.00 Visa gift card. - 2nd Sophie Gernand with a total of 126 mums sold. She will receive a $25.00 Visa gift card. - 3rd Bryson Clevenger with a total of 83 mums sold. He will receive a carry-in lunch with a friend and their favorite staff member. Homecoming Spirit – The spirit at YES is contagious. So many students participated to make it an extra special week. Tomorrow will be the final spirit day with Green and White Day. Please keep in mind all outfits must be school appropriate and no hair dye or face paint will be accepted. The homecoming football game is scheduled for Friday, September 15th with a kick-off at 7:30 pm. Don’t forget the parade scheduled for Saturday, September 16th at 10:00 am. Reading Challenge – Students are to log their reading minutes at home to earn great prizes for their efforts. For every 500 minutes that students read, they will have the opportunity to select new books or other offered incentives. (More information to come as we officially kick off our program next week.) Some students are already cashing in their minutes for new books and Smencils (smelly pencils). Book Fair – The fair will begin on Monday, September 25th and run through Friday, September 29th with a Family Night on Thursday, September 28th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm in the Library.

Charlie Cardinal’s Reading Challenge – All students have the opportunity to read 4 books at their level to earn 2 free Ball State University football game tickets for Saturday, October 21st (BSU Homecoming). If families would prefer 2 women’s’ volleyball vouchers instead, those can be selected as well. Teachers will not be grading or offering extra credit for participation in the reading program, but their minutes do count in regards to the YES Reading Challenge. The dates of the Charlie Cardinal Reading Challenge are September 4th – October 3rd. YPD at YES - Concerned parents have called in to our office regarding police car(s) in our parking lot. Please understand that YES works very closely with YPD and they are free to stop by and check in on us at any time. We actually encourage this to happen. We also have several police officers that have children in our building. If there were ever a threat made that put our students in danger, a mass email and phone call would be sent informing our parents of the issue. Our number one concern is the safety of every child in our building and we take this very seriously. If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ms. Lucas or Mr. Thornburgh by calling our office at (765) 7592770. Library Volunteers Needed – There is still one slots that need to be filled by Mrs. Oetting’s class on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:05. Contact Mrs. Melia Ozbun at 759-2717 or by email at [email protected] if you are able to volunteer your time.
