If you want to go into detail about the differences, I’m afraid that even in three days and nights we couldn’t cover them all.

A:

´ ˇ an ˇ shuo¯ shuo. ¯ dianr na` zanmen jiu` jiand Then let’s just cover some general topics.

B:

` a¯ dou ` beif¯ ˇ angren ´ ch¯ı miansh´ ` ` duo. ¯ zh¯ıdao, ¯ woˇ daji ı bˇıjiao ´ nanf¯ ´ ang de sh´ıhou gen ´ ¯ ¯ pengyou ¯ woˇ b`u xˇıgang lai shuo: ` ch¯ı mian. ` jiegu ´ oˇ bei ` chaoxi ´ ao ` le y¯ıdun. huan ch¯ı mˇı, woˇ ai ` Everyone knows that northerners eat a lot of wheat products. When I had just arrived in the south I said to some friends, I don’t like eating rice grains. I like to eat noodles. And then I was made fun of.

A:

´ sh`ı shu´ de. sheng ¯ e, ¯ mˇı sh`ı sheng ¯ ¯ heh de, f`an cai mˇı zhuˇ ´ cheng shu´ f`an ma! Heh heh. Rice grains are uncooked. Rice is cooked. [The saying is,] ”uncooked rice grains are boiled and become rice,” no?

B:

´ en ´ hu`ı xiaohu ` ´ ¯ ch¯ı mˇı”, bier ¯ sh`ı a. shuo” a` de. b`uneng shuo” ` eˇ ch¯ıf`an. ch¯ı mˇı”, y`ao shuo¯ ch¯ı mˇıf`an, huozh Right. If you say ”eat rice grains” you’ll get made fun of. You can’t say, ”eat rice grains;” you have to say ”eat rice” or ”eat some rice.”

A:

´ yˇou shenme ´ ´ tˇıng yˇou y`ısi de. hai b`utong ne? Pretty interesting. What else is different?

B:

´ ou a, nanf¯ ´ angren ´ baˇ baozi ` ´ ` ao ¯ ¯ haiyˇ yˇe jiaozu o` mantou. caib ` cai ` mantou”, ´ ` ao ` rou ` mantou”. ´ ´ xianr ` ¯ jiu` jiao” jiu` jiao” roub mei ` sh´ıx¯ın mantou”. ´ ` de sh´ıhou juede ´ ¯ de jiao” woˇ gang t¯ıngdao ` e´ q´ıguai. ` tebi And then southerns like to call stuffed buns [plain] steamed buns. So a stuffed bun with vegetables in it is a ”vegetable bun,” and one stuffed with meat is called a "meat bun." If it has no filling it’s called a ”solid bun.” When I first heard it I thought it was really weird.

A:

` a de b`utong. ´ o, zhe` sh`ı jiaofˇ

OK, so a difference in names for things.

B:

` shuo¯ tianq` ˇ angren ´ dou ` nanf¯ ´ ang de dong¯ yˇıwei ¯ ¯ ı. beif¯ ng. zai ˇ ¯ b`u leng. tian q´ısh´ı b`ush`ı de. Right. And then there’s weather. Northerns all think winter in the south isn’t cold. But actually that’s not true.

A:

哦? o? Oh?

B:

` ´ ang sh`ı sh¯ıleng, ˇ ¯ ¯ q`ıwen ¯ daosh` dongti an ı b`u d¯ı, b`uguo` nanf¯ ´ ong. shenme ´ ´ ¯ y¯ıfu dou ¯ meiy` ¯ sh`ı chaosh¯ duo¯ chuan dou ı de, ` ` jiashang ´ nuanq` ˇ ı, leng ˇ ´ ¯ xiang x¯ı le shuˇı sh`ıde. zai mei qˇılai ` dongti ` e´ huaini ´ an ` beiˇ ¯ y`aom`ıng. y¯ı dao ¯ ¯ woˇ jiu` tebi zhen an ˇ u´ huozh ` eˇ nuanq` ˇ ı. f¯ang de huol Winter temperatures aren’t actually low, but in the south it’s a wet cold, and wearing more layers doesn’t help. Everything is humid, like you’re breathing water in. Plus there’s no central heating, so when it gets cold it’s awful. When winter comes, I especially miss the stoves and central heat of the north.

A:

´ ang yuˇ duo, ´ ¯ chaosh¯ o, nanf¯ ı. Oh, lots of rainfall in the south, so it’s humid.

B:

ˇ ang jiangy ` ˇ ganh ` suoyˇ ˇ ı woˇ xiang” ˇ ¯ an. beif¯ uˇ shao, chuny ¯ uˇ gu`ı ` de y`anyuˇ y¯ınggai ˇ angren ´ zˇongjie´ chu¯ sh`ı beif¯ ru´ y´ou” zh¯ılei ¯ ´ de. b`uguo` renmen ´ ´ ´ sh`ı shuˇı zuo` de, ¯ nur lai chang shuo: uˇ¨ en ´ ang sh¯ırun ` du`ı nux` ` ` nanf¯ uˇ¨ ıng de p´ıfu¯ daosh` ı bˇıjiao ` de q`ıhou ˇ hao. In the north there’s little rainfall, so it’s dry. That’s why I think ”spring rain is as precious as oil” and similar sayings probably came out of the north. But people often say that women are made of water, and the moist climate of the south is better for a woman’s skin.

A:

` ` ` ` sh`ı kua¯ women ˇ ´ ang nuzˇ ` kanlai Zheng jiaosh ou nanf¯ uˇ¨ ı le. dan ´ ´ ˇ ang ` ˇ angren, ´ y´ouq´ı sh`ı beiˇ ¯ ao ¯ laishu ¯ haoxi cong sheng o, beif¯ ´ en ´ geng ` gaod ˇ y¯ıxie. ´ shuo” ¯ a` weim ¯ eng ¯ b`ush`ı chang ¯ f¯ang nanr ` an” ` ma? ¯ ong ¯ shand dah

I think Professor Zheng is praising our southern females. But when it comes to height, it seems that northerners – especially northern men – are a bit taller and more intimidating. Don’t we often say, ”Shandong Strongmen?”

B:

´ ˇ angren ´ gaod ` ı, woˇ ¯ ¯ a` y¯ıxie. ¯ b`uguo` yˇe yˇou tel` tongch ang beif¯ ´ heh ¯ ong ¯ ¯ e. ¯ jiush` ren, ` ı Shand Northerners are usually a bit larger. But there are also special cases. I’m from Shandong! Heh heh.

That question is a bit pointed. But compared with southerners, northerners’ personalities are more straightforward and frank, with more of a temper. Most of our history’s great generals came out of the north.
