5TH RUNWAY ATLANTA HARTFIELD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ATLANTA, GA
PROJECT SCOPE Construction of a new 9,000-foot-long by 175-foot-wide concrete ILS runway (10-28) and parallel taxiway. CONTRACT VALUE $61.9 million TYPE Airport construction OWNER City of Atlanta PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Atlanta International Airport paving project commenced on March 1, 2005, and lasted 13 months. It consisted of the construction of the airport’s new fifth runway (10-28), a service building, adjacent taxiway connectors and haul service roads. Work included placement of 220,000 cubic yards of 20-inch depth concrete; installation of 3,000-plus underdrain/lighting cans; placement of 434,100 square yards of soil cement; laying of 78,500 tons of asphalt; excavation of 272,000 cubic yards of material; and installation of 123,000 lineal feet of PVC pipe. To complete work on schedule, Lane divided construction into three main phases and further subdivided into 8 total segments. Phase 1 (50 percent of the project) began on the west side of the runway and included the project’s tie-in to the existing airport. Phase 2 continued with various runway and taxiway sections and Phase 3, included work on the east side of the bridge that spanned I-85.
PROJECT BACKGROUND Increased airline travel in and out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International was causing delays for travelers and contributing to backups at other airports throughout the country. So in 2000, the city of Atlanta embarked on a 10-year, $6 billionplus capital improvement program for the airport. The goal of the Hartsfield Development Program was to allow the airport to handle the projected growth in demand for domestic and international travel. It was one of the largest public works projects in the history of Georgia. PROJECT BENEFITS • Provided runway space to accommodate more than 100,000 landings and takeoffs each year at the world’s busiest airport • Helped reduce delays for travelers and backups at other airports across the country • Saved the airline industry an estimated $260 million a year in delay costs ABOUT LANE The Lane Construction Corporation is one of America’s premier heavy contractors and the preferred partner on projects that connect and improve the communities and the world in which we live.
