RUNWAY 18R-36L MEMPHIS-SHELBY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, MEMPHIS, TN

PROJECT SCOPE Complete reconstruction of 9,350-foot Runway 18R-36L, including all lighting and ILS systems. CONTRACT VALUE $37 million TYPE Airport – concrete-paved runway and taxiway OWNER Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project consisted of the complete demolition and reconstruction of an existing 9,000-foot by 150-foot concrete runway plus the construction of a three-mile service road around the runway’s perimeter. The contract included the on-site crushing of 80,000 cubic yards of concrete pavement for use as backfill and sub-base material. Lane prepared 320,000 square yards of sub-grade for various pavements, which included 103,000 cubic yards of concrete and 91,000 tons of bituminous concrete. Lane installed a triple 10-foot by 10-foot by 250-foot box culvert under the new runway. Along the access road, Lane installed storm drainage and box culverts ranging in size from 15 inches in diameter through seven-foot by five-foot box culverts.

PROJECT BACKGROUND Memphis International Airport is one of the world’s busiest cargo airports and serves as the global hub for FedEx operations. It’s also the hub for Delta Airlines.
