SR 408 CONWAY TO OXALIS ROAD, ORLANDO, FL
PROJECT SCOPE Widening two miles of SR 408 from Conway Road to Oxalis Drive, plus installation of new toll plazas with high-speed toll lanes. PROJECT VALUE $127.4 million OWNER Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority PROJECT DESCRIPTION SR 408, the East-West Expressway, is a main artery in the Orlando area. The section of the highway between Conway Road and Oxalis Driver required updated toll facilities, six new bridges, new lane configurations and an improved drainage system. The project is located directly adjacent to the Orlando Executive Airport, which has strict security provisions, pilot notification requirements and crane height restrictions on pilot training days. Lane worked closely with the airport, several municipalities, utility companies and other stakeholders to coordinate construction and meet critical schedule dates. The contract allowed only nighttime paving, and Lane had to maintain six to eight traffic lanes during the day to handle the 100,000-plus vehicles that use this highway each day. Lane was responsible for more than 60 percent of the project work, including the placement of 28,200 cubic yards of concrete and 66,151 tons of Superpave asphalt, the excavation of 223,097 cubic yards of material, and the installation of approximately 15 miles of pipe and conduit.
With careful, creative planning and coordination, Lane completed the project approximately eight months ahead of schedule. PROJECT BACKGROUND The first sections of SR 408 opened in 1973 and it has been extended several times since then. In September 2003, the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority began a $640 million widening and improvements program for SR 408 that is expected to last for several years. This project was part of those ongoing improvements. PROJECT BENEFITS • Faster movement of traffic through upgraded toll facilities • Improved traffic flow and enhanced safety due to new lane configurations • Less inconvenience to motorists because of nighttime construction and early project completion ABOUT LANE The Lane Construction Corporation is one of America’s premier heavy contractors and the preferred partner on projects that connect and improve the communities and the world in which we live.
