DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AUTOMATED PEOPLE MOVER MAIN STATION, DULLES, VA
PROJECT SCOPE Subcontractor to Turner Construction on the construction of AeroTrain’s main station. Work included excavation, support of excavation, structural concrete, architectural concrete and site work. CONTRACT VALUE $104 million TYPE Heavy Civil OWNER Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority PROJECT DESCRIPTION AeroTrain replaceed most of the current mobile lounges that transported passengers between the airport’s main terminal and concourses. Construction of its main station, adjacent to the airport’s main terminal, required a vertical cut 50 feet below ground at the base of the terminal and the air traffic control tower. Both structures were underpinned with an extensive micropile and shoring system. The support of excavation system included drilled piles, grouted and post-tensioned tiebacks, grouted rockbolts, splitsets and shotcrete. Work included removal of 300,000 cubic yards of rock excavation, with some blasted. The concrete work, which took 24 months, involved 50,000 cubic yards of cast-in-place structural/architectural concrete along with 11 million pounds of rebar and one million square feet of formwork. Lane also erected 250,000 square feet of falsework. The underground main station building is four floors high and measures1,200 feet long by 100 feet wide by 50 feet high.
The bottom level of this structure is similar to a subway station. The top floor has a very complex, post-tensioned, cast-inplace roof structure with enormous skylights. Site work included 1,500 lineal feet of water and sewer lines along with 10,000 square yards of concrete paving. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Washington Dulles International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States. To keep up with everincreasing air transportation demands, the airport had to find a way to transport people to gates faster and solve the problem of overcrowding in the terminals and on the tarmac. PROJECT BENEFITS AeroTrain, Dulles International Airport’s new two-mile-long, dual-lane underground train system, keeps people moving efficiently from the main terminal to the midfield concourses and has allowed passengers to reach connecting fights more quickly.
