1. We have Area and Regional playoffs this weekend and next. All teams have been notified and Scott has posted a referee schedule for this weekend. 2. Generally speaking, all-stars went pretty well this year. However, there were some issues:
Missed referee assignments. We had to make many tough calls to deduct points for referee missed assignments. We had little sympathy as Scott, John and I (1) notified referees of their assignments, (2) created a special spreadsheet that indicated the referee assignment for each game (thanks John) – it was posted continuously on the web site, and (3) created a special web page for each team that outlined their specific referee assignment – they could also access their referee assignment on the app. Regardless, there was a lot of ill feelings over point deductions, including one that cost a team a playoff spot. That said, I think we had about 10 games out of 800 for which points were deducted, which is a 98% success rate, so the deduction threat did make it so that we got almost all games covered. Scott has indicated that we need to be more efficient in figuring out these deductions. Perhaps we could get more involvement/assistance from the coordinator to flag these issues as they happen. Additionally, perhaps we should post on the web site and emphasize more at the coach and ref meeting what the ref assignments (i.e, how to find out, you ref next game unless there are less than 3), etc. Perhaps too we can make some way for teams to "make up" their deductions by doing more games. b. Coach/Spectator behavior: i. Regions have to be vigilant that their coaches and parents know of our zero tolerance. During one event in which a spectator had to be tossed, another spectator told me that there is no rule against him yelling at the referee during the game. I repeatedly told him, over his continued objection, that that's not how we do things. That tells me that coaches are not doing a good job in controlling their touch line and educating them on proper standards of behavior. This has to stop. It starts with the RC’s educating the coaches about our standards of behavior. RC’s also need to explain to coaches that regions and referees are not out to get them. But mostly it falls on the coach. Too often, coaches were part of the problem and not the solution as they often did absolutely nothing to control their touch line. This created a further negative atmosphere for the entire game. ii. We should look at being more specific (i.e., at the coach meetings and elsewhere) about what is expected of coaches and spectators – i.e., types of things you can and cannot do. 3. When we consolidated U14 Area/Regional into Area only, we were limited to four playoff teams per division by rule. So, only 4 out of 14 made it in the boys division. I would like to see that changed to allow discretion to the post-season coordinator like there is in regional. Generally, I could see six teams per U14 Area division making the play-offs. 4. With YDP shortened, next year we will likely have all area/regional playoffs the week after Riverside is over (first week in March), rather than splitting them according to who has a team in play-through in Riverside.
