4 Squares, 2 ½ inches (3 inches, 3 ½ inches) to be used in half square triangles 8 Squares, 2 inches (2 ½ inches, 2 ¾ inches) to be used in flying geese
A combination of many more basic blocks. Start with a square in square Take the 3 ¼ inch center square of Fabric 1 and the triangles of Fabric 3. Always use ¼ inch seams. Working opposing sides attach two triangles to each side of the center square, press open and add the second opposing triangles. Make sure that the triangles are centered on the center square with the end points extending beyond the center square equally on each side.
This is the new larger center block.
Repeat the square in square instruction using the new larger center block and the 4 triangles from Fabric 2, resulting in an even larger new center block.
Next we will work on the half square triangles. Take the designated 8 squares measuring 2 ½ inches of Fabrics 3 and 4. Match them up with patterned sides facing each other (right sides together), making 4 piles of two squares
Draw a line diagonally across the top square.
Then sew a seam ¼ inch away from the drawn line on both sides of that line. You will end up with two seams.
Cut along the center drawn line being careful to not cut too close to either seams.
Press open toward the darker fabric. Trim the half square triangle blocks to 1 ½ inches (2 inches, 2 ½ inches). Set aside with the square in square center block. Take the Fabric 1 rectangles and the 8 Fabric 4 2 inch squares. Place a Fabric 4 square onto one end of the Fabric 1 rectangle.
Draw a line from the center top corner of the square diagonally to the lower outer corner.
Sew along the drawn line. Then trim leaving a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Press the seam open. Take another 2 inch square and line it up with the other end of the rectangle, making sure that there is overlap with the first square.
The overlap ensures a ¼ inch seam allowance for sewing the flying geese into the larger quilt block.
Trim and press open. Repeat with remain three flying geese components. Trim the flying geese blocks to 1 ½ inches (2 inches, 2 ½ inches) making sure that you retain the ¼ inch seam allowance in the point to the block. You will now have 4 flying geese blocks. You now have – 1 square in square center block 8 half square triangles 4 flying geese 4 1½ inch squares of Fabric 4 Line up the flying geese blocks with the half square triangles with the seam line for the flying geese and the seam line for the half square triangles paralleling one another and the Fabric 3 touching the Fabric 4.
Sew each of the half square triangles onto opposite ends of the flying geese. Press open.
We now treat these block combinations as a 9 Patch Quilt Block. We will sew the three pieces in the top row together, the three pieces in the middle row together and the three pieces in the bottom row together.
Line up the middle row first. Place the center block in the center. The flying geese blocks will point outward. Put the flying geese combinations on either side of the center block and sew them together.
Press the seams open toward the center. Take the remaining 2 flying geese blocks and attach one of the 1 ½ inches (2 inches, 2 ½ inches) square to each end. The top and bottom pieces will be the same.
Press toward the corner blocks. Match up the corner seams so that the seam allowance going one direction snugs up against the seam allowance going the other direction.
Sew on top row to center block and bottom row to center block and press open. This is the Aztec Jewel Quilt Block.
