Cut from fabric 1 2 squares measuring 4 ½ inches (5 inches, 6 ½ inches) Cut from fabric 2 2 squares measuring 4 ½ inches (5 inches, 6 ½ inches) Start by making 4 half square triangles. Lay 1 square of fabric 1 onto 1 square of fabric 2 right sides together.
Draw a line diagonally across the top square.
Then draw an additional line ¼ inch along the diagonal line on both sides of it. You now have 3 lines diagonally crossing the square.
Sew along the 2 outside lines (not the middle one).
Cut along the centerline being very careful that you leave adequate seam allowance along both halves.
Press open toward the darker fabric.
Repeat for second set of squares. You now have 4 half square triangles.
Place like a checkerboard on the diagonal.
Sew the top 2 blocks together and the bottom 2 blocks together. Both strips will look the same. Press both blocks toward the dark side.
Lay the two strips in the Broken Dishes pattern and sew the two strips together.
Press the seam open and you have the Broken Dishes Quilt Block.
