PROJECT SCOPE: Replace the existing low level swing-span A. Max Brewer Bridge with a Category 2 high-level fixed-span bridge. CONTRACT VALUE: $44.8 million TYPE: Fixed Span, High-Level Structure (D-B) OWNER: Florida Department of Transportation PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The A. Max Brewer Bridge, which spans the Indian River in Titusville, connected the City of Titusville to the barrier island. It provided access to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, beaches and the Kennedy Space Center. But the 60-year old structure was in poor condition. Work began on a design-build replacement project in 2009. Lane demolished the approach spans, saw-cutting them into five longitudinal sections for each span. Lane then built the new bridge superstructure, which is located south of the old bridge. The replacement bridge is comprised of pre-tensioned, 78-inch bulb-tee approach spans and a post-tensioned, threespan continuous modified 78-inch bulb-tee channel unit. Lane reconstructed and realigned the SR 406 roadway and bridge approaches and built a 300-foot recreational fishing pier that extends into the river parallel to the new bridge at the end of the west causeway. The new 3,200-foot-long bridge has two 12-foot lanes with an eight-foot outside shoulder and a five-foot-wide sidewalk in each direction. The new bridge opened in January 2011
PROJECT BACKGROUND: In 1948 the State Road Department (now the Florida Department of Transportation) built the A. Max Brewer Bridge and the South Relief Bridge as part of the SR 406 corridor development. Recent bridge inspections of the main spanswing bridge and the south relief bridge indicated that they were in poor condition and considered functionally obsolete by today’s design standards. Other deficiencies such as a lack of shoulders and inadequate pedestrian and bicycle facilities were determining factors in the decision to replace the bridge. PROJECT BENEFITS: • Will accommodate marine vessels up to 65 feet above sea level • Eliminates traffic delays associated with the numerous daily bridge openings • Provides room for pedestrian and bike traffic ABOUT LANE: One of America’s premier heavy contractors, The Lane Construction Corporation is the preferred partner to connect and improve the communities and world in which we live.
