Pop the corks!
Last week’s victory at Fort Lewis kept the Eagles’ playoff hopes alive but it was also significant because it marked the 500th victory in Chadron State’s storied football history. The Eagles’ began football in 1911 and are now 500-340-15 all-time. That’s a winning percentage of 58.4 percent.
Chadron State in its 21st season in the RMAC
Chadron State College celebrated its centennial in 2011 but the Eagles begin their 21st season of football in the RMAC. The football program joined the RMAC in 1991 and since then the Eagles have compiled a record of 135-38 in the conference for a winning percentage of over 77 percent.
Eagles trying to fly high into Division II playoffs
The Chadron State College football team will be trying to put the finishing touches on an outstanding regular season and also take the season into the playoffs on Saturday when it hosts Colorado Mines at Elliott Field. Kickoff will be at noon. The Eagles began the season with considerable uncertainty. A coaching change had been made and the fact that seven of the 11 games were on the road

was another potential stumbling block. However, things have worked out well. The coaching staff made up of head coach Jay Long and defensive coordinator Jeff Larson, both new in those positions, along with holdovers Chris Stein, the offensive coordinator, and Craig Jersild, the secondary coach and special teams coordinator, has melded well and devised numerous ways to use the team’s outstanding talent. The Eagles also have proven to be great road warriors. Their only losses through 10 games have been to NCAA Division I-AA Montana State, now 8-1, and Colorado State-Pueblo, which is 10-0 and ranked No. 1 in Division II. The loss to Pueblo was 45-38 in overtime. After winning eight of their last nine games, the Eagles finally broke into the American Football Coaches Association’s Top 25 this week at No. 21. More important, they held on to their No. 3 ranking in Super Region 4 which determines playoff pairings. Pueblo and Ashland College of Ohio, also 10-0, have the top two regional slots, in that order, followed by CSC, Midwestern State of Texas, the University of Indianapolis and West Texas A&M. The top six teams in each of the four regions advance to the playoffs with the No. 1 and 2 teams receiving first-round byes.

Running with the greats
Despite his status as an underclassmen, junior Glen Clinton is paving a nice career for himself. In 29 career games, the hard runner from Cody, Wyo., has gained 2,968 yards - good enough to rank fourth all-time on the career rushing chart. He has ran for over 200 yards twice this season, including a career-high 245 against Western N.M. For his career, he averages 5.3 yards a carry.
Getting those picks
Through 10 games, the Chadron State defense has already accumulated 17 interceptions. In other words, they’ve come up with 11 more than they had last year when they finished with just six. The 17 interceptions by the defense is the highest total for a CSC team since the Eagles had 17 in 2003. Following the 2011 season, Chadron State created 20 turnovers but turned the ball over 24 times. So far this season, the Eagles have created 29 turnovers, while turning it over just 15 times. In addition, the Eagles have returned two of those interceptions for touchdowns.
When there’s a WILL (LB), there’s a way
Kevin Lindholm is having a stellar senior season for the Chadron State defense. Through 10 games, he has accumulated 98 tackles and 17.0 tackles for loss. He’s had two games of at least 17 tackles and he’s averaging nearly 10 stops a game. Lindholm’s tackle total is already the higest total a CSC defender has posted since Aric Lopez had 94 in 2002 and with two tackles against Colorado Mines on Saturday he will become the first player to eclipse 100 since Kevin Homer had 126 following the 1998 season. For his career, Lindholm has played in 44 consecutive games. He’s started 33 straight of them and has accumulated 275 career tackles, which makes him 14 tackles shy of 10th place all-time.
Meet the Orediggers
Colorado Mines will be striving to dash the Eagles’ hopes, and the Orediggers’ pass-happy offense is dangerous. Mines, which is 6-4 overall and 4-4 in the RMAC after losing to Adams State 36-25 on Saturday, leads the conference
in scoring offense at 41.8 points a game and is averaging 473.4 yards a game. Matt Brown, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound sophomore, is the Orediggers’ trigger man. He has averaged 56 passes a game, connecting on 333 of 567 for 3,741 yards and 31 touchdowns. He has thrown 13 interceptions. Mines has rushed for just 825 yards while averaging 3.2 yards a carry. However, the Orediggers have scored 17 touchdowns on the ground. The Orediggers’ top receiver is tight end David Pawelek, who has 81 catches for 1,007 yards and five touchdowns. Two weeks ago during a 45-6 win over Western State, Pawelek caught 16 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Next on the Mines’ receiving list is Jerrod Doucet, a 6-1, 185-pound senior who has 78 catches for 851 yards and eight TDs. Another Mines’ standout is senior punter Taylor Accardi. He led the nation in punting last season with a 48.5-yard average and is averaging 51.8 yards this year. Twenty-six of his punts have been at least 50 yards and 13 have been downed inside the opponents’ 20. The last three games in the rivalry, which dates back to 1938, long before the Eagles were playing most of the Colorado schools now on their schedule, have been donnybrooks. Mines won in overtime 30-27 in 2009, the Eagles won 38-31 two years ago when Glen Clinton returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown with 63 seconds remaining and the Orediggers prevailed 31-24 last year by scoring the only touchdown in the fourth period.
Taylor is Nebraska D-II Player of the Week, again
For the fifth time this season, Trelan Taylor of Chadron State is the Nebraska Division II Defensive Player of the Week. Taylor, a 5-10, 195-pound junior safety from San Diego, Calif., tallied five tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in Chadron State’s 45-20 win over Ft. Lewis. On the season, Taylor has 67 tackles and six interceptions. Taylor’s six interceptions are the most for a CSC defensive back since Mitch Barry had six in 2003.

Jay Long
2012 Chadron State Football
Head Coach / Offensive Line First Year at Chadron State
Jay Long, who was hired in early February, will be entering his first season as the head coach at Chadron State College this fall. Long will be the 25th head football coach at CSC and the third who also played for the Eagles. Orin Weymouth and Ruffus Trapp also played and coached for Chadron State but a former football player hasn’t coached for the school since 1937. Long has spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., where he has guided the Yellowjackets to a 15-15 record. Prior to being the head coach, he was an assistant coach at the school from 2003-09. During that time he served as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and the strength and conditioning coach. The Yellowjackets won two conference titles and appeared in the NAIA playoffs another year while Long coached the line. Long, who graduated from Chadron State College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in science, was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection at center and also earned Farm Team
All-American honors. He also wrestled at heavyweight and qualified for the national tournament for the Eagles. For Long, a native of Sturgis, S.D., returning to his alma mater was an easy choice. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to coach where I played,” he said.

“When I was in the interview I sat down in front of my old locker and it just felt right. When I had questions asked of me in regards to the program, it just felt right. The tradition at Chadron State speaks for itself. I’ve been part of three RMAC championships as a player and now I’m excited for the opportunity to coach and try to win them.” Long said he intends to maintain Chadron State’s strong football tradition. The Eagles have won eight conference titles and have been one of the most consistent Division II programs in the country, having at least six wins in 19 of the last 20 seasons. “I am a Chadron guy who can’t wait to build onto the traditions that were built by the previous coaches before me,” Long said. “Chadron is a great place and after talking to the team in my interview they are excited to have a coach and moving toward being the top team in the RMAC. “I loved my experience at Chadron. It’s been such a successful program and I am very proud to be part of that as a player and now as a head coach. I’m going to bring effort with intensity and we’re going to play a Chadron State brand of football. It’s a hard thing to explain, but we’re going to outhit, outwork and outplay our opponents.”
