Happy 99th!

Chadron State College celebrated its centennial in 2011 but the Eagles begin their 99th season of intercollegiate football in 2013. The football program began when the college was founded in 1911, but the college didn’t field teams during World War I and World War II. The Eagles have an all-time record of 502-341-15.

Chadron State to begin its 22nd season in the RMAC

Although the CSC football program has been around for more than a century, the Eagles have only played in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for 21 years. During that time, they’ve become one of the top teams in the nation and have been the standard in the RMAC, winning eight conference titles. Chadron State joined the RMAC in 1991 and since then the Eagles have compiled a record of 144-39 in the conference for a winning percentage of over 78 percent.

Oh captain, my captain

The 2013 captains for Chadron State College are senior safety Trelan Taylor (Spring Valley, Calif.), senior middle linebacker Shea Koch (Custer, S.D.), senior tailback Glen Clinton (Cody, Wyo.), and junior quarterback Jonn McLain (Chadron). Taylor has been a captain twice, McLain three times. Both Clinton and Koch are first-time captains.

All he needed was a Lane

Cornerback Lane Haller had a game to remember last Thursday in the Eagles’ thrilling 40-34 win in double overtime at Missouri S&T. On third down in the second extra session, Haller picked off the S&T quarterback and returned it for a 79-yard TD to win the game. It was the Eagles’ first win in overtime since 2011 and their first-ever victory against a team from Missouri (1-8). Haller, a junior from Gordon, Neb., also had eight tackles, an interception in the fourth quarter, and he blocked a punt that led to the Eagles’ first TD.

Buffs, Eagles finally meet in the regular season

Chadron State and West Texas A&M have played each other twice before Thursday’s clash but never in the regular season. The Eagles defeated West Texas A&M in the second round of the 2006 playoffs (43-17) and the Buffs knocked off Chadron State in the opening round of the 2012 playoffs (38-30). Both games have been in Chadron, meaning Thursday’s meeting is the first in Texas.

Clinton is Preseason Player of the Year

Six Chadron State football players were placed on the Preseason All-RMAC Team. Tailback Glen Clinton, who led the conference with 1,350 yards rushing, is the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Last season, he rushed for over 100 yards in six games and scored seven touchdowns. He also had 21 receptions for 218 yards and a TD. Joining Clinton on the Preseason All-Conference Team is quarterback Jonn McLain, wide receiver Nathan Ross, offensive lineman Jake McCrary, defensive back Trelan Taylor and kicker Alex Ferdinand. In addition, Ross is the kick returner.

Eagles tabbed second in conference

The Eagles were voted to finish second in the RMAC during the conference’s media day in early August. The Eagles, who finished the 2012 season with a 9-3 record and qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs, received four first place votes compared to six for first-place Colorado State University-Pueblo. “Being picked to finish second is an attribute to us and it shows us we had a good season last year,” head coach Jay Long said. “But that was last year and we can’t hang our hats on what we accomplished a season ago. We don’t know what type of team we’re going to be this year but we’re excited to figure that out.”

Football team wins academic award

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference recognized 21 teams with the top grade point averages in each of the conference’s sports with the inaugural Brechler Awards. Both the Chadron State College football and wrestling teams were honored after having the top team GPAs. The CSC football team had a team GPA of 3.06, while the wrestling team had a GPA of 2.98. The award is named after Paul W. Brechler, the first Commissioner of the RMAC (1976-1990), who along with his wife Wanda, were the first inductees into the RMAC Hall of Fame. Brechler is also the former athletic director at the University of Iowa and was Commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

It’s a brother thing

Starting quarterback Jonn McLain’s family roots run deep at Chadron State. His older brother Joe, who also wore No. 13, was an all-time great for the Eagles. Joe was 38-4 as the starting quarterback at CSC and helped lead the Eagles to the NCAA D-II playoffs three straight years. Joe, as well as his brother, Jacob, are both coaches for the Eagles this season. In addition, Jonn’s younger sisters, Jamie and Jazzy, are on the CSC volleyball team. The other brothers on the CSC football team both play important roles. Patrick O’Boyle is the primary backup to Jonn McLain at quarterback and Danny O’Boyle is a reserve wide receiver. Both played at Gering High for their father, Tom O’Boyle.

True All-American boys

Seven Chadron State College football players were recently named preseason Division II All-Americans by the website USA College Football. Tailback Glen Clinton, who is also a D2Football.com preseason All-American, was named to the first team, while offensive lineman Jake McCrary, safety Trelan Taylor, and wide receiver and kick returner Nathan Ross earned second team accolades. Three were also named honorable mention: quarterback Jonn McLain, cornerback Lane Haller and linebacker Shea Koch.

A New Look

The football team will wear Nike jerseys for the first time in 2013. The Eagles will wear two Nike modified beast game jerseys – a cardinal top with gray numbers outlined in white for home games and a white top with cardinal numbers outlined in gray for road contests. The sleeves are capped on both the home and away jerseys. The home pants will also be gray with cardinal side panels, while the away pants are cardinal with gray side panels. The pants also have a mesh insert making them more breathable and an integrated belt.

No doubt about it, Jay Long had the most successful first season a football coach at CSC has ever had. Under Long’s guidance, the Eagles went 9-3 overall, 8-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and hosted West Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Eagles ended the season as the 18th ranked team in the nation by both the American Football Coaches Association and D2Football. com. Long, who also serves as the offensive line coach, guided three allconference performers and mentored All-American and NFL player, Garrett Gilkey. In addition to Gilkey, four other Eagles earned All-American honors and the Eagles once again led RMAC selections as all-academic student-athletes. Long is the 25th head football coach at CSC and the third who also played for the Eagles. Orin Weymouth and Ruffus Trapp also played and coached for Chadron State but a former football player hasn’t coached for the school since 1937. Prior to being hired at Chadron State in February 2012, Long spent three seasons as the head coach at Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., where he has guided the Yellowjackets to a 15-15 record. Prior to being the head coach, he was an assistant coach at the school from 2003-09. During that time he served as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and the strength and conditioning coach. The Yellowjackets won two conference titles and appeared in the NAIA playoffs two times while Long coached the offensive line. Long, who graduated from Chadron State College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in science, was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection at center and also earned Farm Team All-American honors. He also wrestled at heavyweight and qualified for the national tournament for the Eagles. “I am a Chadron guy who can’t wait to build onto the traditions that were built by the previous coaches before me,” Long said. “Chadron is a great place and after talking to the team in my interview they are excited to have a coach and moving toward being the top team in the RMAC. “I loved my experience at Chadron. It’s been such a successful program and I am very proud to be part of that as a player and as a head coach. I’m going to bring effort with intensity and we’re going to play a Chadron State brand of football.”

Running with the greats

After rushing for 140 yards last week against Missouri S&T, Glen Clinton improved to third all-time on the career rushing chart. He’s now rushed for 3,278 yards, 20 yards more than all-time great Corey Campbell. Clinton is 1,201 yards shy of owning second place. The all-time leading rushing at Chadron State is, of course, Danny Woodhead, who rushed for an astounding 7,962 yards. Clinton, who was originally slated to be a safety, then a wide receiver and kicker at Chadron State, is just the fifth tailback to run for over 3,000 yards at the school.

McLain also climbing the charts

Quarterback Jonn McLain could have one of the more special careers a signal caller at Chadron State has ever had when it’s all said and done. McLain, a junior from Chadron, has thrown for 5,260 yards (eighth all-time), the sixth-most TD passes (51) and he has the highest completion percentage in school history (64.6 percent).

Ross with the reception

Nathan Ross has now had a reception in 34 of 35 games. He’s eighth all-time in yards (1,861), sixth in receptions (140) and fifth in reception TDs (7).
