Eagles to meet Rams

After opening the season last week at Montana State at Bozeman, the Chadron State College football team will take another long bus ride this week to play Angelo State in west-central Texas on Saturday. CSC coach Jay Long said his team will leave early Thursday morning on the approximately 1,000-mile journey. It will be the Eagles’ final non-conference contest. Angelo State opened its season Saturday night by downing another Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team, Western State of Colorado, 42-14. The Rams beat Western 35-12 last year before coming from far behind to turn back the Eagles 49-42 during Family Day at Elliott Field. Angelo State finished the 2011 season with a 5-6 record. Three of the losses were by less than a touchdown, including one in overtime. The Rams are coached by Will Wagner, a west Texas native who had been an assistant at perennial power Northwest Missouri State for 13 years before taking over at Angelo State a year ago. Western State scored first Saturday night, but Angelo State tallied the next 35 points. After the Mountaineers scored again late in the third period, the hosts posted the game’s final TD.

The Rams finished with 432 total net yards and had six different players reach the end zone. Western State managed just 175 yards and only 29 on the ground. Junior quarterback Blake Hamblin, also the starter a year ago, completed 18 of 27 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns in the season-opener. He threw two interceptions and lost a fumble, but Western State could not take advantage of the turnovers. The Rams also survived 128 yards in penalties. Besides Hamblin, just three of Angelo State’s projected starters were in the opening lineup against the Eagles last year, but most of the others were on the team a year ago. Among the missing is last year’s leading rusher, Tristen Carter, who ran for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns, and all of the starters in the offensive line. The returnees include C.J. Akins, who caught 36 passes for 645 yards last season to lead his team. His receptions included five that went for 117 yards against the Eagles. It was Akins who caught Hamblin’s 26-yard pass with only 24 seconds remaining for the winning touchdown last year. Defensively, the only returning starters are tackle Kyle Patterson and cornerback Nekechie Miller.

Chadron State beginning its 98th season of football

Chadron State College celebrated its centennial in 2011 but the Eagles begin their 98th season of intercollegiate football in 2012. The football program began when the college was founded in 1911, but the college didn’t field teams during World War I and World War II. The Eagles have an all-time record of 492-339-15. In 97 season opening games, the Eagles own a 56-38-4 record.

Hello captain

The 2012 captains for Chadron State are senior linebacker Kevin Lindholm (Eads, Colo.), senior inside receiver Cody Roes (Chadron), senior defensive end Keifer Burke (Brady, Neb.), junior safety Trelan Taylor (San Diego) and sophomore quarterback Jonn McLain (Chadron).

Eagle All-Americans

Three Chadron State College football players have each been selected to the 2012 USA Football News Division II Preseason All-American Team. They are Garrett Gilkey, Kevin Lindholm and Keifer Burke. Lindholm was also tabbed as a preseason All-American by Beyond Sports Network.

It’s a brother thing

Starting quarterback Jonn McLain’s family roots run deep at Chadron State. His older brother Joe, who also wore No. 13, was an all-time great for the Eagles. Joe was 38-4 as the starting quarterback at CSC and helped lead the Eagles to the NCAA D-II playoffs three straight years. Joe, as well as his brother, Jacob, are both coaches for the Eagles this season. In addition, Jonn’s younger sister, Jamie, will be a freshman on the CSC women’s basketball team. McLain isn’t the only one with brothers in the mix, though. In fact, there are five sets of brothers on the squad, including three from Nebraska: Keifer and Sawyer Burke (Brady), Patrick and Danny O’Boyle (Gering) and Travis and Wade Reeves (Chadron). The other siblings hail from California: Jojo and Marcus Phillips (LaMesa) and identical twins Brian and Ryan Wood (Stockton).

Nice to meet you

Saturday’s game will be the second time Angelo State and Chadron State have met on the gridiron. Prior to playing Angelo State last season, the last team the Eagles faced from Texas was when they defeated Abilene Christian 76-73 in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Playoffs. The next week, Northwest Missouri State ended the Eagles’ season. Current Angelo State head coach, Will Wagner, was on that staff. The Bearcats also ended the season for CSC in the 2006 playoffs. Wagner was also on that staff.

Angelo stunned CSC last year

In a game of highlights, Angelo State made the last one stand up for a raucous 49-42 victory over Chadron State Saturday, Sept. 10 at Elliott Field. The Rams trailed 42-21 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but they scored 28 unanswered points and returned two fumbles for touchdowns en route to the win. In the fourth quarter, quarterback Blake Hamblin completed 12 of 16 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns and DJ Clough added a 32-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the deciding frame. The winning score came with 24 seconds remaining in the game when Hamblin, who finished the game completing 24 of 37 passes for 271 yards and four TDs, found CJ Akins over the middle for a 26yard score. Akins’ touchdown reception capped off an 11-play, 94-yard drive. The Eagles took possession at the 40yard line following the kickoff and got inside Angelo’s territory but their final heave to the end zone fell short. Chadron State started the game out strongly, scoring its first three touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams. Wide receiver Travis Reeves got things started when he scored on an 11-yard TD pass from quarterback Jonn McLain. The Eagles’ defense was next when defensive back Phil Rivera intercepted Hamblin and returned it 55 yards. Angelo State got on the board following its first possession of the second quarter, but CSC quickly responded when Nathan Ross returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to give the Eagles a 21-7 advantage.

Jay Long

2012 Chadron State Football

Head Coach / Offensive Line First Year at Chadron State

Jay Long, who was hired in early February, will be entering his first season as the head coach at Chadron State College this fall. Long will be the 25th head football coach at CSC and the third who also played for the Eagles. Orin Weymouth and Ruffus Trapp also played and coached for Chadron State but a former football player hasn’t coached for the school since 1937. Long has spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., where he has guided the Yellowjackets to a 15-15 record. Prior to being the head coach, he was an assistant coach at the school from 2003-09. During that time he served as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and the strength and conditioning coach. The Yellowjackets won two conference titles and appeared in the NAIA playoffs another year while Long coached the line. Long, who graduated from Chadron State College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in science, was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection at center and also earned Farm Team

All-American honors. He also wrestled at heavyweight and qualified for the national tournament for the Eagles. For Long, a native of Sturgis, S.D., returning to his alma mater was an easy choice. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to coach where I played,” he said.

“When I was in the interview I sat down in front of my old locker and it just felt right. When I had questions asked of me in regards to the program, it just felt right. The tradition at Chadron State speaks for itself. I’ve been part of three RMAC championships as a player and now I’m excited for the opportunity to coach and try to win them.” Long said he intends to maintain Chadron State’s strong football tradition. The Eagles have won eight conference titles and have been one of the most consistent Division II programs in the country, having at least six wins in 19 of the last 20 seasons. “I am a Chadron guy who can’t wait to build onto the traditions that were built by the previous coaches before me,” Long said. “Chadron is a great place and after talking to the team in my interview they are excited to have a coach and moving toward being the top team in the RMAC. “I loved my experience at Chadron. It’s been such a successful program and I am very proud to be part of that as a player and now as a head coach. I’m going to bring effort with intensity and we’re going to play a Chadron State brand of football. It’s a hard thing to explain, but we’re going to outhit, outwork and outplay our opponents.”
