Eagles finally at Elliott Field
After traveling more than 5,000 miles in eight different states to play its first three games, the Chadron State College football team is delighted to finally be playing at home Saturday, when it will host Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Western State. Kickoff for the Family Day game is set for noon at Elliott Field. The Eagles are 2-1 after losing the opener to Montana State 33-6, but toppled Angelo State 19-6 and Colorado Mesa 41-30 the last two Saturdays. Western State is 0-3. Angelo State downed the Mountaineers 42-14 the week before CSC visited the Rams in San Angelo. A week later, West Texas A&M posted a 57-20 victory over Western and Adams State won 42-14 in Western’s Homecoming game between the archrivals in Gunnison last Saturday. Saturday’s game will be a familiar scene for about half the Western State coaching staff. Head coach Jas Bains and three of his assistants were once Chadron State staff members. Bains was a graduate assistant at CSC for two years and was the team’s defensive backs and special teams coach for three more years before he went to Western State in 2010. After serving as the Mountaineers’
defensive coordinator one year, he was elevated to head coach a year ago when the contract of former head coach Pat Stewart was not renewed. Western assistants Mike Aimone, Tony Case and Ryan McDonough are former CSC graduate assistants. Aimone also played for the Eagles 2005-07. The Mountaineers have won just one game each of the past two years. Their 2011 victory was by a 15-14 score against New Mexico Highlands. The Eagles won by just a 15-7 score in Gunnison a year ago. Western State did some things well against Adams State, despite losing by 29 points. The Mountaineers out-yarded the Grizzlies, 309 to 299, and out-rushed them by more than 160 yards. However, Adams State threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns and also returned an interception 40 yards for a TD. The Grizzlies also kicked a field goal and posted two safeties. Although Adams State completed 30 of 42 passes for 231 yards, its quarterback, Cody Davies, was sacked six times. The Mountaineers averaged 5.2 yards on 40 rushing plays with tailback Germaine Daniels, a 5-foot-10, 215-pound senior, carrying 28 times for 128 yards. For the season, Daniels has 235 yards on 73 attempts.

Chadron State in its 21st season in the RMAC
Chadron State College celebrated its centennial in 2011 but the Eagles begin their 21st season of football in the RMAC. The football program joined the RMAC in 1991 and since then the Eagles have compiled a record of 130-37 in the conference for a winning percentage of over 77 percent. The Eagles have won or tied eight conference titles, including a record 28game winning streak from 2006-09.
McLain is player of the week
All three Nebraska Division II schools – Wayne State, Chadron State College and Nebraska-Kearney – have representatives for the Nebraska Division II players of the week. On the gridiron, Chadron State’s Jonn McClain is the Offensive Player of the Week, while Richard Daniel of Wayne State is the defensive player of the week. In volleyball, Mari Jo Massanet, of No. 1 Nebraska-Kearney receives the honor. McLain, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound quarterback from Chadron, completed 30 of 40 passes for 324 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-30 victory over conference rival Colorado Mesa University.

Getting those picks
Through three games, the Chadron State defense has already came up with three interceptions, in other words, they’ve come up with half the total they had last year when they finished with six. Following the 2011 season, Chadron State created 20 turnovers but turned the ball over 24 times. So far this season, the Eagles have created seven turnovers, while turning it over just twice.

Jay Long
2012 Chadron State Football
Head Coach / Offensive Line First Year at Chadron State
Jay Long, who was hired in early February, will be entering his first season as the head coach at Chadron State College this fall. Long will be the 25th head football coach at CSC and the third who also played for the Eagles. Orin Weymouth and Ruffus Trapp also played and coached for Chadron State but a former football player hasn’t coached for the school since 1937. Long has spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., where he has guided the Yellowjackets to a 15-15 record. Prior to being the head coach, he was an assistant coach at the school from 2003-09. During that time he served as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and the strength and conditioning coach. The Yellowjackets won two conference titles and appeared in the NAIA playoffs another year while Long coached the line. Long, who graduated from Chadron State College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in science, was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection at center and also earned Farm Team
All-American honors. He also wrestled at heavyweight and qualified for the national tournament for the Eagles. For Long, a native of Sturgis, S.D., returning to his alma mater was an easy choice. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to coach where I played,” he said.

“When I was in the interview I sat down in front of my old locker and it just felt right. When I had questions asked of me in regards to the program, it just felt right. The tradition at Chadron State speaks for itself. I’ve been part of three RMAC championships as a player and now I’m excited for the opportunity to coach and try to win them.” Long said he intends to maintain Chadron State’s strong football tradition. The Eagles have won eight conference titles and have been one of the most consistent Division II programs in the country, having at least six wins in 19 of the last 20 seasons. “I am a Chadron guy who can’t wait to build onto the traditions that were built by the previous coaches before me,” Long said. “Chadron is a great place and after talking to the team in my interview they are excited to have a coach and moving toward being the top team in the RMAC. “I loved my experience at Chadron. It’s been such a successful program and I am very proud to be part of that as a player and now as a head coach. I’m going to bring effort with intensity and we’re going to play a Chadron State brand of football. It’s a hard thing to explain, but we’re going to outhit, outwork and outplay our opponents.”
