CSC opening RMAC play at Colorado Mesa

The Chadron State College football team will open its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule Saturday by playing the same team it closed the 2011 season against. The Eagles will meet the Colorado Mesa Mavericks in Grand Junction with kickoff set for 1 p.m. Chadron State edged the Mavericks 2417 in overtime in last year’s season finale at Elliott Field. Chadron State out-yarded the Mavs 417 to 203, but it was 17-17 on the scoreboard when the fourth quarter ended. The Eagles scored the winning touchdown on a pass from quarterback Brandon Gorsuch to tight end Jeff Alcorn that was officially just six yards long but covered about 25 yards. Much has changed since that November day when that game was played. For instance, both teams have new head coaches. Jay Long, a 2001 graduate of Chadron State where he played center on the football team, is in charge of the Eagles, and Russ Martin, a 1982 CSC grad who played linebacker for the Eagles, is the Mavericks’ mentor. Prior to taking his new job, Martin had been the offensive coordinator at Nebraska-Kearney for eight years. He also was

the head coach at Black Hills State for four years in the late 1990s. Martin’s staff at Mesa includes CSC’s former head coach Bill O’Boyle, now Mesa’s offensive coordinator, and long-time CSC defensive coordinator Todd Auer, who holds that responsibility at Mesa. O’Boyle was on the CSC staff 20 years, including seven years as head coach, and Auer had been with the Eagles 22 years before they moved to Grand Junction. Both teams also have quite a few new players in their lineups. Nine Eagles who were regulars a year ago have graduated while four starters on offense and six on defense last season are no longer on the Mesa roster. The Mavericks begin their RMAC schedule at 0-2. They lost to Humboldt State at Arcata, Calif., 38-19 in the season opener and were defeated by Northern Colorado 40-3 last Saturday. Humboldt State beat another California team, Azusa Pacific, 42-12 last Saturday. Northern Colorado, which is an NCAA Football Championship Series (NCAA 1-AA) member, broke a 12-game losing streak with its victory over the Mavericks. Northern Colorado got off to a good start by intercepting a pass on Mesa’s first play from scrimmage, but led just 10-3 at halftime.

Chadron State beginning its 21st season in RMAC

Chadron State College celebrated its centennial in 2011 but the Eagles begin their 21st season of football in the RMAC. The football program joined the RMAC in 1991 and since then the Eagles have compiled a record of 129-37 in the conference for a winning percentage of over 77 percent. The Eagles have won or tied eight conference titles, including a record 28game winning streak from 2006-09.

It’s a brother thing

Starting quarterback Jonn McLain’s family roots run deep at Chadron State. His older brother Joe, who also wore No. 13, was an all-time great for the Eagles. Joe was 38-4 as the starting quarterback at CSC and helped lead the Eagles to the NCAA D-II playoffs three straight years. Joe, as well as his brother, Jacob, are both coaches for the Eagles this season. In addition, Jonn’s younger sister, Jamie, will be a freshman on the CSC women’s basketball team. McLain isn’t the only one with brothers in the mix, though. In fact, there are four sets of brothers on the squad, including three from Nebraska: Keifer and Sawyer Burke (Brady), Patrick and Danny O’Boyle (Gering) and Travis and Wade Reeves (Chadron). The other set hails from California, identical twins Brian and Ryan Wood (Stockton).

Familiar foes

While the Eagles and Mavericks have been longtime RMAC rivals, Saturday’s game will have an unusual feel to it. That’s because former Chadron State head coach Bill O’Boyle, who is the school’s second winningest coach with a record of 57-21, will be calling plays for the Mavericks in his new job as the offensive coordinator. In addition, Todd Auer, now the Mavs’ defensive coordinator, coached at Chadron State for 22 years. Jay Long, the Eagles’ head mentor, played for O’Boyle’s offensive lines at Chadron State in the 90s and Jeff Larson, CSC’s defensive coordinator, was a graduate assistant under Auer.

Casey is player of the week Chadron State’s Conor Casey was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Nebraska Division II

Defensive Player of the Week Monday for his stellar performance in the Eagles’ 19-7 victory at Angelo State. Casey, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound cornerback from Rapid City, S.D., helped the Eagles limit the Rams to seven points while accumulating five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. It was Casey’s second interception in as many weeks. In addition to Casey’s nod as the defensive player of the week, Chadron State’s Glen Clinton was the Nebraska D-II Offensive Player of the Week. Clinton, a 5-10, 200-pound tailback from Cody, Wyo., carried the ball 17 times for 117 yards and a rushing touchdown to lead Chadron State in its victory.

They’ve played ‘em close

Although Chadron State leads Colorado Mesa in their all-time series with a 16-5 advantage, several of the games have been close. Last year, the Eagles survived in overtime but other than a 31-7 victory in 2009, many of the RMAC foes’ recent games have been nail-biters. In fact, in the last 10 years Chadron State owns just a 25.3 to 17.5 point advantage over the Mavs in their games. Mesa last defeated Chadron State in 2003 (21-14) but they came close in 2005 (26-24) and 2007 (7-6).

Making it a habit

Junior Glen Clinton rushed for 117 yards in the Eagles’ 19-7 victory at Angelo State to earn Nebraska Division II Player of the Week honors. The total also signified that Clinton has rushed for over 100 yards 11 times in just 21 career games. For his career, he has rushed for 1,966 yards on 398 carries (4.9 yards per carry) and has scored 14 TDs. If he gains 34 yards Saturday, he’ll become the 11th player in school history to rush for over 2,000 yards.

Close to 200

Another player close to a milestone is senior linebacker Kevin Lindholm, who is just four tackles shy of 200 for his career. He’d be the first player to eclipse the number since Austin Bailey did in 2008. Lindholm has appeared in every game the past three seasons and has tallied 21.5 tackles for loss, has eight sacks and recovered three fumbles.

Jay Long

2012 Chadron State Football

Head Coach / Offensive Line First Year at Chadron State

Jay Long, who was hired in early February, will be entering his first season as the head coach at Chadron State College this fall. Long will be the 25th head football coach at CSC and the third who also played for the Eagles. Orin Weymouth and Ruffus Trapp also played and coached for Chadron State but a former football player hasn’t coached for the school since 1937. Long has spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., where he has guided the Yellowjackets to a 15-15 record. Prior to being the head coach, he was an assistant coach at the school from 2003-09. During that time he served as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and the strength and conditioning coach. The Yellowjackets won two conference titles and appeared in the NAIA playoffs another year while Long coached the line. Long, who graduated from Chadron State College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in science, was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection at center and also earned Farm Team

All-American honors. He also wrestled at heavyweight and qualified for the national tournament for the Eagles. For Long, a native of Sturgis, S.D., returning to his alma mater was an easy choice. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to coach where I played,” he said.

3

“When I was in the interview I sat down in front of my old locker and it just felt right. When I had questions asked of me in regards to the program, it just felt right. The tradition at Chadron State speaks for itself. I’ve been part of three RMAC championships as a player and now I’m excited for the opportunity to coach and try to win them.” Long said he intends to maintain Chadron State’s strong football tradition. The Eagles have won eight conference titles and have been one of the most consistent Division II programs in the country, having at least six wins in 19 of the last 20 seasons. “I am a Chadron guy who can’t wait to build onto the traditions that were built by the previous coaches before me,” Long said. “Chadron is a great place and after talking to the team in my interview they are excited to have a coach and moving toward being the top team in the RMAC. “I loved my experience at Chadron. It’s been such a successful program and I am very proud to be part of that as a player and now as a head coach. I’m going to bring effort with intensity and we’re going to play a Chadron State brand of football. It’s a hard thing to explain, but we’re going to outhit, outwork and outplay our opponents.”
