THIS WEEK: RIT AND THE CAPE COD CLASSIC ON TAP FOR RAIDERS
In a schedule twist for this weekend, the Raiders will be hosting RIT on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then the team is set to travel to Cape Cod to face No. 20 Quinnipiac in a non-conference game at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center for the third annual Cape Cod Collegiate Classic. The Tigers are back on the Colgate schedule after a two-year break. They are coming off a split at No. 3 Michigan and a slim 3-2 loss against Penn State on Oct. 20. They will play Robert Morris on Thursday night. The Bobcats have been ranked each week this season and went 1-0-1 in two games against Ohio State last weekend. Overall, Quinnipiac is 3-1-1 this season.
NEXT WEEK: THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE COLGATE-CORNELL RIVALRY
What a great way to start off the league season for both Cornell and Colgate as the schools will be renewing the rivalry that dates back to 1920-21. Last season, the series went to the Raiders with a two-game sweep. Colgate held on for a 2-1 win at Lynah Rink in the first game, followed by the best comeback in recent memory with four goals in the third period to win 5-3 and sweep the Big Red. Cornell opens its season this weekend with two games against Colorado College in Ithaca. The Big Red played two exhibition games last weekend with a 6-2 win over the US Under-18 National Team and a 2-2 tie with Brock.
LAST TIME OUT: RAIDERS SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES WITH BOWLING GREEN
Colgate played its second Central Collegiate Hockey Association team in a row with a visit from Bowling Green last weekend. The Falcons were able to come out on top in the first game on Friday night with a 3-1 win. Jeremy Price was the lone goal scorer for Colgate in the first game. The Raiders got revenge on Saturday night with a 4-2 win after all four goals were scored by rookies, including three from the same line. The game got off to a great start with three TALE OF THE TAPE goals in the first 20 minutes, including the first shortie of the season from Kyle Baun. GATE RIT

3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES
HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN 20th Season St. Lawrence ’84
Don Vaughan enters his 20th year as head coach at Colgate and has the most wins in program history. He enters this season with a career record of 313-311-71. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Colgate has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two NCAA tournament berths, and 18 appearances in the ECAC Hockey tournament. Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to seven ECAC semifinal clashes, including his last in the 2011-12 campaign. The 2000 ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored four Hobey Baker Award finalists, five All-Americans, two ECAC Players of the Year, an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honorees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients, a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and 42 All-ECAC Hockey selections. In addition to his commitment to success on the ice, Vaughan has continually demonstrated his commitment to the success of his student-athletes in the classroom. During his tenure, Vaughan has graduated 99 percent of his players. Since the creation of the award in 2000, Vaughan’s athletes have been named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team over 50 times. Last season, the Raiders were ranked for most of the season and achieved its highest ranking since 1999-2000 after being ranked seventh in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine National Poll in December. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Austin Smith led the nation in goals with 36 and was named an All-American and the first Colgate player to be named a Hobey Hat Trick Finalist. He was the second ECAC Hockey Player of the Year under Vaughan and was a first team all-league selection. In 2010-11, Vaughan guided the Raiders to their fifth appearance in the ECAC Hockey semifinals. In the process, Colgate won back-to-back series against nationallyranked Rensselaer and Union. The previous season (2009-10), the Raiders finished in the top-4 in the league with a 12-8-2 mark and a 15-15-6 record overall. During his career in hockey, Vaughan probably never witnessed anything like how the 2008-09 season went down. Despite finishing 12-18-7, Vaughan’s Raiders posted a national record 19 overtime periods, shattering the former record of 16 set the previous season by Minnesota. Colgate finished the season with sevenconsecutive overtime games. In all, 25 of the 37 games were determined by one goal or fewer and one could make a case for 27
l since two games would have ended with a one goal difference if not for a late empty net score. Colgate’s highlights included a 1-0 road upset of then #19 Dartmouth on Valentine’s Day at Thompson Arena; a 3-2 overtime victory over #11 and ECAC champion Yale in the final regular season game on ESPNU and a pair of ties versus arch rival Cornell. Vaughan also watched junior David McIntyre post a break out season en route to garnering first team AHCA/Reebok All-American honors, as well as all-College Hockey News accolades. McIntyre, who went on to gain first team all-league mention, was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. In his 15th season, Vaughan guided the Raiders to an 18-18-6 record and a spot in the ECAC semifinals. On February 16, 2008, he became the school’s all-time winningest coach in the program as Colgate blanked Union 8-0. The Raiders enjoyed success during the campaign, among which included upsetting nationally-ranked Clarkson, which was ranked seventh in the country, in a three-game series in Potsdam, N.Y. to advance to the semifinals of the ECAC Championships. On November 11, 2007, the President of Colgate, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan Endowed Coaching Chair for Men’s Ice Hockey. During the 2005-06 campaign, Vaughan continued to lead Colgate to new heights. His Raiders captured their second ECAC Hockey regular-season title in three years, and won 20 games for the third straight season for the first time in program history. Four of Vaughan’s Raiders earned all-league recognition, including Mark Dekanich, who became the first player in school history to receive the Ken Dryden Award as the league’s goaltender of the year. Vaughan returned from a one-year hiatus to guide Colgate to 25 victories, the most in his tenure, during the 2004-05 campaign. Vaughan’s skaters advanced to the ECAC semifinals for the third time in his Colgate career. The Raiders earned a berth in the 2005 NCAA tournament, where they lost to Colorado College in a one-goal game in the Midwest Regional semifinals. Colgate finished the season ranked 14th in the national polls. That year, Vaughan earned his 200th career coaching victory with a 3-1 win against Union on Feb. 18, 2005. After a one-year absence from postseason competition, Colgate returned to the ECAC playoffs in 2002. That season, Vaughan reached two milestones: he registered his 150th career victory in a 4-1 win against Iona on Nov. 3, and posted his 100th career ECAC win versus Dartmouth on Jan. 11. For his accomplishments, Vaughan was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association as a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is given annually to the University Division Coach of the Year. Vaughan first led Colgate to national prominence during the 1999-00 season. That year, he coached the Raiders to the NCAA East Regional and a final ranking of

BAUN NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Rookie Kyle Baun earned the first weekly honor of the season for Colgate as he was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week after his performance in the split with Bowling Green. After going scoreless in the first game against the Falcons, Baun responded in the second game with a goal and an assist in the 4-2 win on Saturday night. He posted a shorthanded goal that gave Colgate a 2-0 lead in the first period. Baun then added an assist as well for his second multi-point game of the season. FACEOFF SUCCESS The Raiders have been excellent this season so far at the faceoff dot, winning 57 percent of draws. Rookie Tylor Spink has been the leader at the dot, winning 56-of-92 draws for a 63.6 percentage. All four centermen on the Raiders have earned possession on over 50 percent of faceoffs. Last season, Colgate was at 50 percent after five games and at the end of the year the Raiders won 47 percent of faceoffs.
ROOKIES PACE RAIDERS VS. BOWLING GREEN In the second game of the weekend against the Falcons, the rookies came alive once again by scoring all four goals in a 4-2 win. Three of the goals came in the first period and in a span of just under seven minutes. Kyle Baun and Tylor Spink had a goal and an assist, helping Colgate to a 3-0 lead. Darcy Murphy added his second of the season late in the second period. PLAYING LIKE VETERANS The rookies have been playing like veterans early in the season as they have factored in nine of Colgate’s 16 goals. The seven skating newcomers have at least one point this season and goalie Spencer Finney has earned one start. SENIORS STEPPING UP The Class of 2013 has also been doing its part with seven goals and eight helpers for 15 points. Robbie Bourdon is leading the group with two goals and two assist for four points, which came in the Niagara game, while Jeremy Price has a goal and three helpers for four points as well. He scored the lone goal in the 3-1 loss on Friday night to Bowling Green. Kurtis Bartliff has chipped in with two goals and one assist for three points. All three players are now over 100 games played as Bartliff joined the group during the Miami series. CAREER NIGHT FOR RIVELLINI Senior Billy Rivellini got his senior year off to an impressive start with a pair of goals against Niagara. Prior to Tuesday night’s game, the Virginia native, had scored two goals in his career. His first of the year was a great tip in off of a Spiro Goulakos slap shot from the point. The second was on a great face off win from Mike McCann. VAUGHAN BACK FOR 20TH SEASON Head coach Don Vaughan enters his 20th season behind the bench for the Raiders. He reached the 300-win milestone last season and has 314 career victories, which is the most in Colgate history. He coached his team to the final four of the conference tournament for the seventh time and tutored his third Hobey Baker Award finalist, first Hobey Hat Trick Finalist and first team All-American Austin Smith. HOPING FOR A BIG SECOND YEAR The Raiders had a few rookies last year that flew under the radar with the success of upperclassmen on the roster. Joe Wilson had a great first season with 23 points as part of the first line of Austin Smith and Chris Wagner. He tallied 10 goals and 13 assists and scored in the semifinal matchup against Union. Down the stretch he had 16 points in the final 17 games of the season, including a pair of three-point nights against Cornell and Rensselaer. Spiro Goulakos was another key player for Colgate during his first season and tallied 19 points on three goals and 16 assists. He was fourth on the team in assists and third on the team in ECAC Hockey play with 12 helpers. MIHALIK BACK BETWEEN THE PIPES Junior Eric Mihalik is back as the team’s primary netminder. Mihalik started 27 games for Colgate in 2011-12 and posted a 14-12-2 record with two shutouts. He had a 2.88 goals against average and a .898 save percentage. He has played over 50 games in his career with 22 career victories. He has six career playoff wins and has helped the Raiders to championship weekend in his previous two seasons. Rookie Spencer Finney will be the backup for Mihalik after the Raiders lost Alex Evin and Bryan Bessette to graduation. SCOUTING THE TIGERS RIT got its season off to a great start by beating a top-five team in Michigan on the road by a 5-4 score in overtime. The Wolverines then came back and beat the Tigers 7-2 the next night. Next up was Penn State for the home opener and RIT dropped a 3-2 decision. The Tigers will play Robert Morris in its conference opener on Thursday night before coming to Starr Rink. They are averaging three goals a game, but are giving up over 4.5 goals per contest. Senior Jeff Smith is the leader on the stat sheet with five points coming on three goals and two assists. Junior Ben Lynch is second on the squad with three points on a goal and two helpers. Greg Noyes, Adam Mitchell and Brad Reid each have two points on the season. The Tigers have yet to score a goal on special teams and the gamewinner against Michigan came from Adam Hartley. In net, Josh Watson and Jordan Ruby have split time with Watson earning two starts and one for Ruby. Waston is 1-1-0 with a .894 save percentage and 3.53 goals against average. Both netminders have given up seven goals this season, but for Ruby they came in one game as the Wolverines potted seven in the fifth career start for Ruby. SERIES HISTORY Colgate and RIT will be playing for the ninth time in the series history with the Raiders owning a 7-1-0 advantage. The teams last played back in 2009-10 with Colgate coming away with a 3-2 win at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. The Raiders are on a three-game winning streak in the series with two of the games decided by one goal. SCOUTING THE BOBCATS Quinnipiac enters the weekend as the 20th-ranked team in the nation after a 3-1-1 start with wins over Maine, Robert Morris and Ohio State. The season started out well with a 2-1 win up at Maine, which is a tough place to play. The Bobcats then split a weekend series with Robert Morris with both games ending in 4-0 scores. They earned a tie and a win against the Buckeyes last weekend. Quinnipiac is averaging two goals a game and has yet to score with the man advantage, but defense has been the key, allowing just 1.4 goals per game. Jeremy Langlois is pacing the Bobcats with five points on three goals and two assists, including a shorthanded goal. Clay Harvey has made the most of his playing time with a team-high four points on four helpers, while Tampa Bay draft pick Matthew Peca has two goals and an assist for three points. In all five games played by the Bobcats, neither team has scored on the power play, but there have been five shorthanded goals scored. In net, Eric Hartzell has started all five games and already has a shutout and is 3-1-1 on the season. He leads the conference in save percentage at .955 and goals against average at 1.09. He has allowed just five goals on 11 shots. Michael Garteig has played 28 minutes so far in his first season and made seven stops on eight shots. SERIES HISTORY The series continues to go back-and-forth with the two teams as the series is tied at 11-11-2 after last year’s five meetings. The series started back in 2005-06 and Quinnipiac and Colgate have met 24 times, which is the most for the Raiders against any team since 2005-06. They have met three times in the first or quarterfinal round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament and have gone to three games each time, with Colgate earning two of the three series victories.
