THIS WEEK: SACRED HEART IN FOR TWO TO START 2013
Colgate will welcome 2013 with two games against Sacred Heart on Jan. 4 and 5. The Pioneers have had a rough start to the season as they are winless in their first 17 games and sit at 0-15-2. They have played 13 Atlantic Hockey games this season and are 0-11-2. The two ties came against Army and American International and the Pioneers lost to Rensselaer in their last game. The Raiders last played Sacred Heart two seasons ago and won 5-0 in 2010. It will be the third and fourth game against Atlantic Hockey for the Raiders and so far this year, Colgate is 2-0-0 against the conference with wins over Niagara and RIT.
NEXT TIME OUT: BACK TO CONFERENCE PLAY AFTER A WEEKEND OFF
Colgate will resume conference play following another weekend off as the Raiders travel to Rensselaer and Union on Jan. 18 and 19. They will not play a non-conference game for the rest of the season after the series with Sacred Heart. The Engineers are turning their season around as of late with a 5-2-2 record in their last nine games after a winless stretch of seven games. They have a tough test this coming weekend with No. 9 Boston University and No. 4 New Hampshire. Union continues to be a top team in ECAC Hockey and in the country and is 9-4-4 this year. However, the Dutchmen have hit the skids with one win in its last six games. They started the year on fire with a unbeaten streak of seven games.
LAST TIME OUT: SKATING TO A SWEEP OVER UMASS
Led by the rookies, Colgate earned a sweep of Hockey East foe UMass, outscoring the Minutemen 11-6 in the two games. The Raiders’ power play was the main story as five of the 11 goals came with the extra man, including a 3-for-4 night in game one of the sweep. Kyle Baun led the way with six points during the two games with three goals and three assists. He had two goals and two assists for four TALE OF THE TAPE points in game one’s 6-4 win. 3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES
HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN 20th Season St. Lawrence ’84
Don Vaughan enters his 20th year as head coach at Colgate and has the most wins in program history. He enters this season with a career record of 313-311-71. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Colgate has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two NCAA tournament berths, and 18 appearances in the ECAC Hockey tournament. Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to seven ECAC semifinal clashes, including his last in the 2011-12 campaign. The 2000 ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored four Hobey Baker Award finalists, five All-Americans, two ECAC Players of the Year, an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honorees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients, a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and 42 All-ECAC Hockey selections. In addition to his commitment to success on the ice, Vaughan has continually demonstrated his commitment to the success of his student-athletes in the classroom. During his tenure, Vaughan has graduated 99 percent of his players. Since the creation of the award in 2000, Vaughan’s athletes have been named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team over 50 times. Last season, the Raiders were ranked for most of the season and achieved its highest ranking since 1999-2000 after being ranked seventh in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine National Poll in December. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Austin Smith led the nation in goals with 36 and was named an All-American and the first Colgate player to be named a Hobey Hat Trick Finalist. He was the second ECAC Hockey Player of the Year under Vaughan and was a first team all-league selection. In 2010-11, Vaughan guided the Raiders to their fifth appearance in the ECAC Hockey semifinals. In the process, Colgate won back-to-back series against nationallyranked Rensselaer and Union. The previous season (2009-10), the Raiders finished in the top-4 in the league with a 12-8-2 mark and a 15-15-6 record overall. During his career in hockey, Vaughan probably never witnessed anything like how the 2008-09 season went down. Despite finishing 12-18-7, Vaughan’s Raiders posted a national record 19 overtime periods, shattering the former record of 16 set the previous season by Minnesota. Colgate finished the season with sevenconsecutive overtime games. In all, 25 of the 37 games were determined by one goal or fewer and one could make a case for 27
l since two games would have ended with a one goal difference if not for a late empty net score. Colgate’s highlights included a 1-0 road upset of then #19 Dartmouth on Valentine’s Day at Thompson Arena; a 3-2 overtime victory over #11 and ECAC champion Yale in the final regular season game on ESPNU and a pair of ties versus arch rival Cornell. Vaughan also watched junior David McIntyre post a break out season en route to garnering first team AHCA/Reebok All-American honors, as well as all-College Hockey News accolades. McIntyre, who went on to gain first team all-league mention, was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. In his 15th season, Vaughan guided the Raiders to an 18-18-6 record and a spot in the ECAC semifinals. On February 16, 2008, he became the school’s all-time winningest coach in the program as Colgate blanked Union 8-0. The Raiders enjoyed success during the campaign, among which included upsetting nationally-ranked Clarkson, which was ranked seventh in the country, in a three-game series in Potsdam, N.Y. to advance to the semifinals of the ECAC Championships. On November 11, 2007, the President of Colgate, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan Endowed Coaching Chair for Men’s Ice Hockey. During the 2005-06 campaign, Vaughan continued to lead Colgate to new heights. His Raiders captured their second ECAC Hockey regular-season title in three years, and won 20 games for the third straight season for the first time in program history. Four of Vaughan’s Raiders earned all-league recognition, including Mark Dekanich, who became the first player in school history to receive the Ken Dryden Award as the league’s goaltender of the year. Vaughan returned from a one-year hiatus to guide Colgate to 25 victories, the most in his tenure, during the 2004-05 campaign. Vaughan’s skaters advanced to the ECAC semifinals for the third time in his Colgate career. The Raiders earned a berth in the 2005 NCAA tournament, where they lost to Colorado College in a one-goal game in the Midwest Regional semifinals. Colgate finished the season ranked 14th in the national polls. That year, Vaughan earned his 200th career coaching victory with a 3-1 win against Union on Feb. 18, 2005. After a one-year absence from postseason competition, Colgate returned to the ECAC playoffs in 2002. That season, Vaughan reached two milestones: he registered his 150th career victory in a 4-1 win against Iona on Nov. 3, and posted his 100th career ECAC win versus Dartmouth on Jan. 11. For his accomplishments, Vaughan was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association as a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is given annually to the University Division Coach of the Year. Vaughan first led Colgate to national prominence during the 1999-00 season. That year, he coached the Raiders to the NCAA East Regional and a final ranking of

CHOUINARD RECEIVES 50TH SILVER PUCK At the annual banquet on Saturday, the Silver Puck Club and head coach Don Vaughan awarded Assistant Athletic Director for Medical Services Steve Chouinard with the 50th Silver Puck at the Hall of Presidents at Colgate. Chouinard has been working with the men’s hockey team in multiple capacities since arriving at Colgate 17 years ago. He does everything from equipment repair, skate sharpening and coordinating meals. MR. CLUTCH With the gamewinner on Dec. 1 to give Colgate the 5-4 win over Clarkson, Robbie Bourdon now has nine gamewinners in his three-plus years with the Raiders. He ended two 5-4 wins this season, including the come-from-behind 5-4 win against No. 12 Dartmouth. Two years ago he ended the Rensselaer series with a laser in the second overtime to upset the higher-seeded Engineers. GOULAKOS SHINES The sophomore defensemen continues to be the leader on the power play with four power play goals, including two in the 5-4 win over Clarkson on Dec. 1. 3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES
2012-13 COLGATE GAME NOTES MOVING UP ALL-TIME LIST Bourdon enters this weekend with 85 points after scoring the gamewinner against Clarkson. He has 39 goals and 46 assists in 130 games played. He is currently tied with assistant coach Brad Dexter, who had 85 points on 20 goals and 65 assists in 108 games. RAIDERS SWEEP WEEKLY AWARDS After earning two wins over ranked teams on Nov. 16 and 17, the Colgate men’s hockey team swept all ECAC Hockey weekly awards with Robbie Bourdon and Spencer Finney taking home honors. Bourdon took home the player of the week award, while Finney was chosen as both the goalie of the week and rookie of the week. Bourdon tallied five points on three goals and two assists, while Finney recorded two wins and a shutout. REVENGE IS SWEET Against #12 Dartmouth, the Raiders avenged their defeat late last season with their own comeback to stun the Big Green. Dartmouth scored three third period goals to tie the game at 4-4 last year and won in overtime. This year it was Colgate’s turn and the Raiders erased a three-goal lead with four scores in the third period to win 5-4. It was the biggest come back since Colgate defeated Cornell 5-3 on Jan. 28 of last year with four goals in the final period to win. It was also the first win of the season when trailing after two periods. BLANKING THE CRIMSON The next night it was the defense that led the Raiders to victory against #17 Harvard. In the 1-0 win, Colgate got a great start from Finney, who earned the win over Dartmouth as well. In his third career start he made 25 saves, including one amazing save with his stick as time expired to earn the shutout over the Crimson. Finney did have help along the way as Colgate had 15 blocked shots. The Raiders also had a big kill on a five-minute major, which stretched into the third period. It was the first-ever shutout of Harvard for the Raiders in the 50-plus years NATIONAL POLLS of the series. USCHO.COM NATIONAL POLL Rk. School Pts. FINNEY STYMIES HARVARD The rookie goaltender from Pontypool, Ont., earned his first career shutout in his third start and became the first first-year nerminder to earn a shutout since assistant coach Jason Lefevre registered his in 1999. TOP POWER PLAY UNIT HAS YOUNG FLARE The first line over the boards during a power play features four rookies and a sophomore. The group has scored 12 of the 17 power play goals with four coming from Spiro Goulakos. Kyle Baun and Tyson Spink are second with three power play goals after scoring against UMass. Another rookie is leading the way on the second unit as Darcy Murphy has two power play goals. NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED Murphy came to Colgate in the fall after leading the Ontario Junior Hockey League in goals with 52 in 48 games and his smell for the goal has continued into college. The rookie from Marysville, Ont., has scored five goals in his first 16 games, including two power play goals. He had a four-game goal-scoring streak stopped at Cornell and had a chance to score the gamewinner in overtime. MIHALIK MILESTONE Goaltender Eric Mihalik played in his 61st game at Cornell and it was his 60th career start. The junior ranks 12th all-time for Colgate netminders in games played. He has either shared time in net or has been the primary goaltender since arriving on campus. He is sixth on the all-time list in minutes played at 3631:02 in two-plus seasons. AN ALL-ONTARIO ROOKIE CLASS The Raiders are welcoming eight new members to the squad this season. The rookies are all from Ontario and six of the eight are coming from the Central Canadian Hockey League, while two are products of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Half of the newcomers played for the Cornwall Colts of the CCHL and made the league championship series. Kyle Baun, Mike Borkowski, Tylor and Tyson Spink will have an easier time adjusting on the ice as all four played together with the Colts. Darcy Murphy played two years with the Wellington Dukes of the CCHL and led the league with 52 goals in 48 games. Kevin Lough also played in the CCHL and had 95 points in his career as a defenseman for the Cumberland Grads. Ryan Johnston is another defenseman coming from the CCHL and he was the league’s defenseman of the Year for the Nepean Raiders and helped the Raiders to the title last year.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS It has been a tough season so far for Sacred Heart as the Pioneers are still looking for their first win of the year. They come to Hamilton with an 0-15-2 record with ties against Army and American International. Sacred Heart has played two ECAC Hockey schools in Princeton and Rensselaer and lost both. The Pioneers dropped a tough 4-3 decision to the Tigers and were beaten, 6-2, by the Engineers on New Years Eve. Scoring defense has been a problem as they are giving up just under five goals a game and then they are scoring around two goals per contest. Sacred Heart has scored on 38 goals in 17 games with Brian Sheehan scoring seven of them to lead the team. He has eight assists as well for a total of 15 points and he is also one of five players on the team with a power play goal. Eric Delong is tied with Sheehan for the team lead in points at 15 and he leads in assists with nine. He also has added six goals and is tied with Alex Stuart for the most experienced player with 124 games played. Drew George is tops on the team in power play goals with two this year. The goaltender situation is up in the air for the Pioneers with each netminder getting time this season. In the last four games, all three have earned starts and twice they were relieved in the middle of the game. Steven Legatto has started the most games with nine and is 0-8-1 with a 4.48 goals against average. Andrew Bodnarchuk has started six games and is 0-5-1 and rookie Fredrik Melander has began two games with losses in both. SERIES HISTORY Colgate has owned the series with a perfect 7-0-0 mark against Sacred Heart. The teams first met back in 2000-01 with a 8-2 win at Starr Rink. The series has left Colgate’s home ice only once and that came in 2003-04 when the Raiders defeated the Pioneers 7-2 on their own ice. The last meeting came back in 2010 with the Raiders shutting out the Pioneers in a 5-0 win at Starr Rink.
