THIS WEEK: FIRST ROAD CONFERENCE WEEKEND
The Raiders will continue league play this week with visits to Quinnipiac and Princeton. The Bobcats will see Colgate for the second time in two weeks after a very physical game on Cape Cod. Quinnipiac dropped out of the rankings last week and dropped a tough 2-1 decision to American International on Tuesday night. The Bobcats outshot the Yellow Jackets, 40-17, in the game. Princeton opened its season last weekend at the Ivy Showcase at Brown. The Tigers dropped both games with one-goal losses to Brown and Yale. They did have a lead against the Bulldogs in the second period, but Yale responded with two goals to win 3-2.
NEXT WEEK: DARTMOUTH AND #14 HARVARD VISIT HAMILTON
After their first conference weekend on the road, Colgate will return to Starr Rink for an early conference showdown with a pair of Ivies. Dartmouth has been one of the big surprises so far this season with a 3-0-1 start to the year. The Big Green tied Yale in its season opener and since then Dartmouth has outscored its opponents 13-5, including a 4-0 win over Brown and a 7-4 thrashing of the Bulldogs. Harvard will enter this coming weekend with a 2-1-0 record and is ranked 14th in the nation. The Crimson started the year with a win over Bentley and then split with Brown and Yale, which included a 5-1 loss to the Bulldogs.
LAST TIME OUT: PHYSICAL COLGATE-CORNELL RIVALRY WEEKEND
It’s always a hard-fought weekend when Colgate and Cornell face off and this year was no different. The two teams had never played against each other in the opening conference weekend since the ECAC Hockey began in 1960. The Raiders dominated the first game and outshot the Big Red, 45-14, but Cornell was able to score in each period to earn the 3-1 win. The chippie play worked its way over to Lynah Rink on Saturday night and Colgate took advantage with two TALE OF THE TAPE power play goals in the first period. However, Cornell netted two scores in the final frame with one on the power GATE QPAC play to force a 2-2 tie. 3.33.......................Scoring Offense........................ 1.71

3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES
HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN 20th Season St. Lawrence ’84
Don Vaughan enters his 20th year as head coach at Colgate and has the most wins in program history. He enters this season with a career record of 313-311-71. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Colgate has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two NCAA tournament berths, and 18 appearances in the ECAC Hockey tournament. Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to seven ECAC semifinal clashes, including his last in the 2011-12 campaign. The 2000 ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored four Hobey Baker Award finalists, five All-Americans, two ECAC Players of the Year, an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honorees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients, a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and 42 All-ECAC Hockey selections. In addition to his commitment to success on the ice, Vaughan has continually demonstrated his commitment to the success of his student-athletes in the classroom. During his tenure, Vaughan has graduated 99 percent of his players. Since the creation of the award in 2000, Vaughan’s athletes have been named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team over 50 times. Last season, the Raiders were ranked for most of the season and achieved its highest ranking since 1999-2000 after being ranked seventh in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine National Poll in December. Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Austin Smith led the nation in goals with 36 and was named an All-American and the first Colgate player to be named a Hobey Hat Trick Finalist. He was the second ECAC Hockey Player of the Year under Vaughan and was a first team all-league selection. In 2010-11, Vaughan guided the Raiders to their fifth appearance in the ECAC Hockey semifinals. In the process, Colgate won back-to-back series against nationallyranked Rensselaer and Union. The previous season (2009-10), the Raiders finished in the top-4 in the league with a 12-8-2 mark and a 15-15-6 record overall. During his career in hockey, Vaughan probably never witnessed anything like how the 2008-09 season went down. Despite finishing 12-18-7, Vaughan’s Raiders posted a national record 19 overtime periods, shattering the former record of 16 set the previous season by Minnesota. Colgate finished the season with sevenconsecutive overtime games. In all, 25 of the 37 games were determined by one goal or fewer and one could make a case for 27
l since two games would have ended with a one goal difference if not for a late empty net score. Colgate’s highlights included a 1-0 road upset of then #19 Dartmouth on Valentine’s Day at Thompson Arena; a 3-2 overtime victory over #11 and ECAC champion Yale in the final regular season game on ESPNU and a pair of ties versus arch rival Cornell. Vaughan also watched junior David McIntyre post a break out season en route to garnering first team AHCA/Reebok All-American honors, as well as all-College Hockey News accolades. McIntyre, who went on to gain first team all-league mention, was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. In his 15th season, Vaughan guided the Raiders to an 18-18-6 record and a spot in the ECAC semifinals. On February 16, 2008, he became the school’s all-time winningest coach in the program as Colgate blanked Union 8-0. The Raiders enjoyed success during the campaign, among which included upsetting nationally-ranked Clarkson, which was ranked seventh in the country, in a three-game series in Potsdam, N.Y. to advance to the semifinals of the ECAC Championships. On November 11, 2007, the President of Colgate, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan Endowed Coaching Chair for Men’s Ice Hockey. During the 2005-06 campaign, Vaughan continued to lead Colgate to new heights. His Raiders captured their second ECAC Hockey regular-season title in three years, and won 20 games for the third straight season for the first time in program history. Four of Vaughan’s Raiders earned all-league recognition, including Mark Dekanich, who became the first player in school history to receive the Ken Dryden Award as the league’s goaltender of the year. Vaughan returned from a one-year hiatus to guide Colgate to 25 victories, the most in his tenure, during the 2004-05 campaign. Vaughan’s skaters advanced to the ECAC semifinals for the third time in his Colgate career. The Raiders earned a berth in the 2005 NCAA tournament, where they lost to Colorado College in a one-goal game in the Midwest Regional semifinals. Colgate finished the season ranked 14th in the national polls. That year, Vaughan earned his 200th career coaching victory with a 3-1 win against Union on Feb. 18, 2005. After a one-year absence from postseason competition, Colgate returned to the ECAC playoffs in 2002. That season, Vaughan reached two milestones: he registered his 150th career victory in a 4-1 win against Iona on Nov. 3, and posted his 100th career ECAC win versus Dartmouth on Jan. 11. For his accomplishments, Vaughan was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association as a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is given annually to the University Division Coach of the Year. Vaughan first led Colgate to national prominence during the 1999-00 season. That year, he coached the Raiders to the NCAA East Regional and a final ranking of

POWER PLAY COMING ALIVE After a tough start to the season on the power play, Colgate has really turned it on recently. In the last four games the Raiders have six goals with the man advantage, including all three against the Big Red last weekend. Colgate was 6-for-22 on the power play in those four games for a 27.3 success rate. Previously, the Raiders were 1-for24 in the first five games.
TOP POWER PLAY UNIT HAS YOUNG FLARE The first line over the boards during a power play features four rookies and a sophomore. The group has scored four of the last six power play goals with two coming from Spiro Goulakos. Kyle Baun and Tyson Spink have also scored power play goals with Baun scoring at Cornell and Spink adding one against RIT. Another rookie is leading the way on the second unit as Darcy Murphy is tied with Goulakos for the team lead with two power play goals. NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED Murphy came to Colgate in the fall after leading the Ontario Junior Hockey League in goals with 52 in 48 games and his smell for the goal has continued into college. The rookie from Marysville, Ont., has scored five goals in his first nine games, including two power play goals. He had a four-game goal-scoring streak stopped on Saturday night at Cornell and had a chance to score the gamewinner in overtime, but Andy Iles came up with the save. MIHALIK MILESTONE Goaltender Eric Mihalik played in his 61st game on Saturday at Cornell and it was his 60th career start. The junior ranks 12th all-time for Colgate netminders in games played. He has either shared time in net or has been the primary goaltender since arriving on campus. He is sixth on the all-time list in minutes played at 3631:02 in two-plus seasons. He has a 26-30-5 overall record and has backstopped the Raiders to back-to-back appearances in the ECAC Hockey Championship weekend. LAST FIVE GAMES The Raiders are 3-1-1 in their last five matchups and have outscored their opponents 18-11. The first period has been the most successful over the last five with eight goals scored and allowing only three. Opponents have score once in the first period the last three games. SCOUTING THE TIGERS Princeton has only played two games this season and both were losses in the Ivy Showcase at Brown. Both defeats were by one goal with a 2-1 loss to the Bears and then a tough 3-2 loss to Yale the following night. The Tigers scored once on the power play in seven opportunities and killed 8-of-9 opponent man advantage chances. They had trouble starting in both contests as Brown and Yale scored in the first period, so at the first intermission Princeton was down 1-0 in each game. Tyler Maugeri is off to good start for the Tigers, scoring two of the three goals in the Ivy Showcase, including the lone power play goal. He had three goals all of last season as a rookie. Andrew Calof returns as one of the top performers for Princeton and recorded two points on a goal and an assist in the first two games. Defenseman Michael Sdao, an Ottawa draft pick, leads the team with two assists. In net, Mike Condon has started both games for the Tigers as he was given the starting job early in the year over Sean Bonar after the two split time last season. He allowed five goals on 61 shots for a .912 save percentage. Last season, he made 13 starts, while Bonar earned 19 in 2011-12. SERIES HISTORY This will be the 99th meeting between these two schools, dating back to the first contest back in 1935-36. Colgate is holding onto a slim lead at 48-44-6 after the two teams split last season with each team winning on its home ice. The Tigers have a 26-12-4 advantage at Hobey Baker Rink and have won the last two against Colgate at home.
