Historical Commission Board Meeting Minutes February 4, 2016
Present: Bill Segars, Chairman; Sarah Smith, Patty Holly, Loris Flowers, Jane DuBose, and Brian Gandy. Our guest was Mrs. Wilhelmina P. Johnson. The meeting was held at the Historical Commission building. Bill called meeting to order. Minutes from the January 7, 2016 meeting were read and approved. Marker Program: Darlington Manufacturing Co. marker text for the front is complete and for the back side being worked on. Timeline for Lumber marker is finished and work on text to start soon. Brian will be writing an article for the News and Press explaining the marker program and requirements for historical markers. Scott Lynch has recently been in Darlington taking photos of places to see in the upcoming booklet “The Top 50 Things to Do in Darlington County”. Major Projects: Work is ongoing on the Masonic Lodge records. Trinity United Methodist Church records have been scanned. The new brochure for the Historical Commission is complete, except for the map. There is a grant under discussion for the County Green Initiative Survey. Donations: Doris Mims and Frances Mims have donated photos and documents from the Mims family recently. Visitors: 104 visitors to the archives in January 2016. Other: The African American Family Research and Cemetery Protection Workshop will be held March 4-5, 2016. The meeting will be shorter this year and some parts of the program have been put on hold. Brian has done a survey of the newly found Warr Cemetery. It is from the early to mid-1800’s and located near the Mechanicsville community. Mrs. Johnson made remarks to the board and complimented Brian, the director, on the good work he has been doing.
