Diversity Committee Meeting Monday, June 5, 2017 Conference Call NOTE: All minutes are final after approval by the committee chair and all committee decisions are subject to final approval by the Board. Committee Members Present: Craig Pasqua, Chair; Vince Owens, Martha Ehrenfeld, Carl Mendoza, Darren Moore, Rosalyn Moya and Patty Nuñez Committee Members Absent: None Staff Members Present: Steve Leube and Silvia Dueñas-Bielser Craig, chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, called the meeting to order at 8:02 am. The following motion was duly made and seconded: RESOLVED, to approve the minutes of May 1, 2017. The motion was approved by a vote of 6 in favor, 0 opposed and 0 abstentions.
Chair’s Report – Craig Pasqua Craig welcomed everyone. Craig reported on his attendance to the EPATT fundraiser that was also attended by several board members and USTA NorCal staff. Craig relayed that this was Dick Gould’s last emcee function at EPATT fundraiser as well as that EPATT has two years to find a new location. Craig reported that San Jose officials have announced a date for the Backesto Courts rededication to the Don Johnson courts. The date is Saturday, July 29. Craig invited all committee members to attend, if possible. Silvia to provide more details. Craig attended the North American Indian Championships in Nebraska; an event organized by USTA South West section. There he met with Wahlesah Rose, who sits on the national D&I committee. He spoke to her what committee is up to in NorCal. Staff Report Silvia reiterated Craig’s comments on EPATT fundraiser. Silvia reported that two GLTF members, Peg Stevenson and Michael Derwin, will be spotlighted for Pride Month on the NorCal website. Martha participated in US Gay Open (USGO) event over Memorial Day weekend and represented NorCal as well. The committee discussed the USGO and looking into getting tournament sanctioned in 2018. Silvia discussed her attendance to the Latino Summit in Sacramento coordinated by the Latino community Foundation. Silvia reported that further outreach to community leaders has not yielded a candidate for the Arthur Ashe scholarship. Vince volunteered to get start in outreaching this fall for the 2018 scholarship in getting candidates to apply early. Darren volunteered in joining Vince.
Budget Craig highlighted that spending YTD stands at 30%. Old Business Silvia announced that a story regarding Vince’s Mills’ recognition was posted on the NorCal website. New Business Silvia asked committee members if they wished to attend again the Oakland ESPY Awards , celebrating the academic and athletic achievements of the Oakland Athletic League's best high school student athletes being held on June 11 in Oakland. Vince and Darren expressed interest, so Silvia will coordinate tickets. The following motion was duly made and seconded: RESOLVED, that the committee meeting be adjourned at 8:36 am.
