Diversity Committee Meeting Monday, April 3, 2017 Conference Call NOTE: All minutes are final after approval by the committee chair and all committee decisions are subject to final approval by the Board. Committee Members Present: Craig Pasqua, Chair; Vince Owens, Martha Ehrenfeld, Carl Mendoza, Darren Moore, Rosalyn Moya and Patty Nuñez Committee Members Absent: None Staff Members Present: Steve Leube and Silvia Dueñas-Bielser Craig, chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, called the meeting to order at 8:01 am. The following motion was duly made and seconded: RESOLVED, to approve the minutes of March 13, 2017. The motion was approved by a vote of 6 in favor, 0 opposed and 0 abstentions.
Chair’s Report – Craig Pasqua Craig welcomed and introduces Steve Leube, USTA NorCal Executive Director, to group. Steve introduces himself and conveyed D&I’s important role in growing the game in NorCal. Craig proposed forming subcommittees where committee members can delve deeper in a D&I committee goal. Carl Mendoza proposed forming a Coaching Subcommittee where work would focus on coordinating and leveraging partnerships and USTA resources for coaching learning opportunities. Vince Owens proposed forming a Scholarship Subcommittee and be tasked with creating new outreach strategies. Craig proposed forming a Program Developing Subcommittee tasked with working with an East San Jose community program. Committee discussed and Craig asked they send Silvia which subcommittee they would like. Craig gave an update on the remaining of courts at Backesto to the Don Johnson courts. Craig attended a city meeting, but issue was not discussed as the areas representative was not in attendance. Craig will continue to pursue. Staff Report Silvia reported that three scholarship recipient alumni have been featured for Diversity spotlights on the website. Silvia reported that Sunnyvale coach, Francisco Ruiz and she had been interviewed for a local Univision show called, “Retrato Hispano”. Topics covered were Latinos in tennis, tennis programs available, and Silicon Valley Tennis academy. Show aired March 23. Silvia also recapped the USTA Annual Meeting pointing out that Adaptive Tennis is now part of D&I. Budget Craig highlighted that spending YTD stands at 4%.
