LAST TIME OUT: On Saturday, fell to host SUNY New Paltz, 5-0, in the second round of the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial TourBrianna Taylor nament. NJCU, the defending tournament champion, was outshot, 28-4. NJCU was facing its second consecutive team from the 2011 NCAA Tournament to open the season. New Paltz reached the 2011 Sweet 16 before losing 1-0 to eventual NCAA champion Messiah. HISTORIC OPENER: On Friday in the 2012 opener, NJCU forced a 2-2 tie with #22 ranked SUNY Cortland. It was the first time NJCU had tied a nationally ranked team (no wins) in program history. Devon Williams had a penalty kick with 21 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Hoffman, who made a career-high 18 saves, stopped a penalty kick in the 104th Amanda Spethmann minute of double overtime to keep it tied. She had 11 against New Paltz and has now reached double figures in saves seven times in her career. ABOUT THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury was 9-9-1 last year and 6-2 in the Skyline Conference, finishing third in that league before losing in the ECAC Quarterfinals. Like NJCU, OW also lost some talent from 2011, including Skyline Player of the Year, then senior forward Cassandra Esposito. SecondTeam All-Conference picks JoAnna Kettell and Allison Pirone return. OW has not scored Olympia Sciortino in its first two games and been outshot 26-13.
