The No. 66 Indiana men’s tennis team concludes its three-match Big Ten homestand when it faces No. 4 Ohio State at 1 p.m., on Friday, April 7. The Hoosiers split a pair of conference tilts with Wisconsin and Northwestern on March 31 and April 2. IU defeated the Badgers, 4-3 before falling by the same score to the Wildcats. The loss to Northwestern snapped a nine-match winning streak, the longest since the 1984-85 team won 11 straight.
SCOUTING NO. 4 OHIO STATE The No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team defeated then-No. 5 Illinois, 5-2, Sunday at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus. The win was the Buckeyes' first against the Illini since Ohio State beat Illinois in the 2001 Big Ten Tournament title match. It marked the first regular-season conference loss for Illinois since 1997, a streak of 86 matches. Ohio State is 16-1 overall, 4-0 in conference action and riding a seven-match winning streak. In the match against Illinois, Chris Klingemann won at No. 1 for OSU, while Bryan Koniecko, Dennis Mertens and Ross Wilson won at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively. The Buckeyes also claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Koniecko, Klingemann, Devin Mullings and Steve Moneke are ranked No. 49, No. 76, No. 83 and No. 116 nationally in singles for the Buckeyes. Scott Green and Ross Wilson own an overall mark of 21-2 at the No. 1 doubles slot and are ranked No. 2 in the country. OSU’s No. 3 duo of Mullings and Klingemann own a doubles mark of 15-1. Mertens leads the Buckeyes with 19 singles victories, while Mullings has 18. Since a 5-2 loss at Notre Dame on Feb. 24, the Buckeyes have reeled off seven straight wins. Included in that streak, Ohio State has defeated all four of its conference foes. Along with its win over Illinois, OSU owns victories over Iowa (7-0), Minnesota (5-2) and Purdue (7-0). Aside from the conference battles, IU and Ohio State have two common opponents in Butler and Toledo. Ohio State defeated both teams 7-0, while Indiana knocked off Toledo, 6-1, and Butler, 5-2.
RETURN TO THE RANKINGS The Hoosiers returned to the rankings for the first time in over a month with the release of the April 4 ITA Fila Rankings. Indiana garnered the No. 66 spot in the poll after dropping out of the poll on March 1. Indiana’s highest ranking this season was No. 60. IU earned that ranking on three occasions, including the first poll of the season on Jan. 10. The Hoosiers were also No. 60 on Feb. 7 and Feb. 14.
ISHTUGANOV KNOCKS OFF RANKED FOE Senior Dmytro Ishtuganov defeated his second ranked opponent of the 2005-06 season when he defeated No. 51 Christian Tempke of Northwestern on April 2. After winning the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, Ishtuganov rolled though Tempke, 62, in the second to claim the victory. The win upped the Hoosiers’ No. 1 singles player to 18-12 overall and 11-8 at the top slot. Earlier in the year, Ishtuganov defeated then-No. 120 Bryan Koniecko of Ohio State at the Big Ten Indoor Singles Championship in November for his first victory over a ranked foe.
GUTTING IT OUT With the Hoosiers’ March 31 match against Wisconsin on the line, junior David Bubenicek stepped to the forefront for IU. After falling in the first set to Wisconsin’s Nolan Polley, 6-2, Bubenicek rallied to notch his first three-set victo-
ry of the season. With the tide of the match turning the way of the Badgers as UW won a pair of singles matches to even it at three, Bubenicek picked up the slack for Indiana. On serve at 4-3 in the second set, the Hoosier junior broke Polley and served out the set, 6-3. In the decisive set, Bubenicek continued to roll by picking up breaks to take 32 and 5-2 leads, before serving out a 6-2 victory. The victory gave the Hoosiers its eighth straight victory, 4-3.
STREAKING DOUBLES Senior Neil Kenner and sophomore Michael McCarthy have been on a roll at the No. 3 doubles position. After starting out 0-2 as a duo, the pair have run off seven straight victories. The duo improved to 3-0 in Big Ten play with wins over Wisconsin and Northwestern on March 31 and April 2. The winning streak is the longest by an IU doubles team this season.
MAGICAL NO. 300 In his 21st season as the Hoosier head coach, Ken Hydinger joined a list of elite Hoosier leaders with his 300th win at the institution. By virtue of IU’s 5-0 victory over Colgate on March 13, Hydinger joined a list that includes Bob Morgan (baseball), Bob Knight (men’s basketball), Lin Loring (women’s tennis), Jerry Yeagley (men’s soccer), Diane Stephenson (softball), Ernie Andres (baseball) and Branch McCracken (men’s basketball) as one of only eight head coaches to win 300 games at IU. "I have been blessed in many ways during my time here at IU," Hydinger said. "Some of those great memories were being around some elite coaches. I've been blessed to be in a good place and to have had some great competitors on my teams." HEAD COACH (SPORT) Bob Morgan (Baseball) Bob Knight (Men’s Basketball) Lin Loring (Women’s Tennis) Jerry Yeagley (Men’s Soccer) Diane Stephenson (Softball) Ernie Andres (Baseball) Branch McCracken (Men’s Basketball) Ken Hydginer (Men’s Tennis)

DEFEATING RANKED OPPONENTS After dropping its first six matches to ranked opponents this season, the Hoosiers defeated then-No. 39 Penn State, 6-1, in University Park, Pa. The win was not only the first over a ranked opponent on the season, but the first victory for IU over a top-40 program on the road in three years. The last time IU defeated a top-40 opponent on the road was Jan. 24, 2003, when it knocked off then-No. 27 Notre Dame, 4-3.
SENSATIONAL SOPHOMORES The sophomore tandem of Dara McLoughlin and Michael McCarthy have made quite the impact in their second seasons with the Hoosiers. Both players rank among the team leaders in singles victories while playing at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, respectively. After only seeing limited action in the singles lineup as a rookie, McLoughlin has played in every dual match this season. In doing so, the Dublin, Ireland native has garnered the top dual-match record of any Hoosier at 13-7. McLoughlin won 10 straight matches prior to a loss to Juan Gomez of Northwestern. Included in the run were the clinching matches over South Florida and Penn State, as well as a win over then-

No. 60 Brett Helgeson of Notre Dame. McLoughlin owns a 19-12 overall record and 3-2 in Big Ten play. McCarthy battled through his rookie season at IU with injuries, but still managed to win 15 singles matches. He has surpassed that total already in his sophomore campaign with 18 victories. Playing mainly at the No. 5 position, the Cincinnati, Ohio native has racked up a dual-match mark of 11-8. He owns a pair of conference wins as well. Over the last few weeks, McCarthy has teamed with senior Neil Kenner at the No. 3 doubles position. The duo has gone 7-2, including winning its last seven matches.
THREE SETS TO HOOSIERS’ LIKING Sophomore Dara McLoughlin has been successful when forcing matches to three sets. After dropping his opening match of the season in three sets, McLoughlin has won his last nine matches when taking the match to a deciding set. In fact, six of those nine victories were of the come-from-behind persuasion. From Feb. 26 through March 15, the Dublin, Ireland native claimed five consecutive matches in three sets. McLoughlin is not the only Hoosier to find success when matches go to three sets. Senior Dymtro Ishtuganov and sophomore Michael McCarthy have each claimed five three-set wins. Senior Neil Kenner and freshman Peter Antons each have a pair.
CHANCES AT 20 WINS In 2004-05, only two Hoosiers reached the 20-win plateau in singles. That number has a chance to double in 2005-06. With four players at either 18 or 19 victories, the Hoosiers have a chance to have their most 20-match winners since the 1999-00 season. In fact, the Hoosiers had five players
with 20 or more singles victories during that season. Sophomore Dara McLoughlin leads the team with 19 wins, while fellow classmate Michael McCarthy, junior David Bubenicek and senior Dmytro Ishtuganov each have 18 victories on the year.
TOUGH SCHEDULE The Hoosiers will play 11 opponents ranked in the Fila Top-75 rankings as of April 4 on their 2006 schedule. Indiana still has No. 4 Ohio State, No. 35 Michigan and No. 40 Minnesota on the schedule. The Hoosiers have already played then-No. 3 Illinois, then-No. 18 Notre Dame, then-No. 32 Louisville, then-No. 39 Middle Tennessee State, then-No. 39 Penn State, then-No. 65 Purdue, then-No. 59 Northwestern and then-No. 69 Ball State.
KNOCKING OFF THE RANKED Sophomore Dara McLoughlin highlighted the Hoosier effort against then-No. 18 Notre Dame with his second victory over a nationally-ranked foe this season. After falling in the first set, 6-1, McLoughlin fought back to take the second, 6-4, over No. 60 Brett Helgeson. The Dublin, Ireland native broke Helgeson to take a 5-3 lead. The ND player returned the favor and broke back to get on serve trailing 5-4. McLoughlin would not be outdone, as he broke Helgeson for the second straight time to claim a 6-4 second-set win. In the third and deciding set, McLoughlin was down an early break, but responded by winning four straight points to build 5-2 cushion. He served out the match for the 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. McLoughlin evened his mark against ranked opponents at 2-2. Earlier in the year, he defeated then-No. 115 Marc Spicijaric of Illinois at the ITA Midwest Regional.

BUBENICEK ASCENDING THROUGH THE LINEUP After beginning the season as the Hoosiers’ No. 4 singles player, junior David Bubenicek moved up to the No. 2 position, where he has gone 6-4 on the year. Bubenicek clinched the Hoosiers’ 4-3 win over Wisconsin with a come-from-behind three-set victory over this year’s Big Ten Indoor Singles Champion Nolan Polley. The Czech Republic native has an overall singles mark of 18-8, including a 12-6 mark during the spring season. He started the spring dualmatch season at the No. 4 singles position before moving up to No. 3. He is 3-0 at the No. 4 position and 3-1 at the No. 3 slot. His 18 wins are tied for second on the team with senior Dmytro Ishutganov and sophomore Michael McCarthy. Bubenicek entered the campaign as the lone returning player with 20 or more singles victories last season. He racked up a 21-7 singles mark, including a 7-3 Big Ten ledger as a junior. He played primarily at the No. 3 singles with a 9-3 mark in that slot.

SPRING ADDITIONS The Hoosiers added junior Arnaud Roussel and freshman Tetta Oyama to the roster for the spring season. The pair adds more international flare to an already diverse IU roster. Roussel is a native of Bordeaux, France, while Oyama is from Shizuoka, Japan. Roussel competed in the Hoosiers’ season-opening doubleheader sweep of Butler and Bradley. He won at the No. 6 singles position against the Bulldogs before winning in straight sets against the Braves at No. 5. Roussel transferred to Indiana after spending two-and-a-half seasons at Mississippi State. He amassed an 11-11 record during those seasons with the Bulldogs. Roussel saw his most extensive action during his freshman campaign in which he played at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions. He rallied from a set down in Mississippi State’s first round NCAA Tournament victory over Wake Forest to clinch the match in 2004. The Frenchman was the junior champion of the Aquitanie Region in France and lists Pete Sampras and Juan-Carlos Ferrero as his favorite tennis players. Oyama was one of the top junior players in Japan. The freshman ranked as high as No. 3 in junior singles and No. 2 in junior doubles during the 2003 season in his native country. In 2005, he ranked as high as No. 187 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Combined Junior Rankings, which combines a player’s performance in doubles and singles while promoting doubles play junior players. He captured the singles title at the Hong Kong ITF Junior Tournament in January 2005. Oyama was a doubles finalist at the Neway International Junior Championships in January 2005 and at the China International Junior Championships in September 2004. He also advanced to the semifinals in singles at the 2005 BKSP International Junior Championships. Oyama lists Carlos Moya, Gustavo Kuerten and Andre Agassi as his favorite tennis players.
