2012 POTTER VALLEY RIESLING WINEMAKER’S NOTES After running out of Riesling three quarters of the way through the year on a pretty regular basis, I think that we finally have talked our grower into selling us enough fruit to make it all the way. That is, if all you rabid Riesling fans out there can show a bit of restraint, which I fear will be difficult once you taste this year’s offering… 2012 was a wonderfully refreshing change after three cooler vintages. Best described as “classic,” it was a wonderfully warm, even, near-ideal growing season with very few weather challenges, which delivered excellent quality fruit. The later season in Potter Valley lends itself perfectly to growing Riesling, allowing for long slow maturation and flavor development with great balance and lower sugars. This vineyard site combined with cellar practices that have been fine-tuned over 41 years yields a delicate and beautifully balanced wine, loaded with nuance. Bright, clear, pale gold in color, this Riesling opens with rich peach and cut apple aromas. Lychee and rose high tones along with wet stone and class Riesling spice round out the nose. Soft and round entry on the palate with great weight and acid balance, this wine offers juicy layers of apricot and white peach flavors, all rounded out with a long rich finish of spiced pear tart. This will be a winner with Thai food, so grab a bottle and order up some Tom Yum; you won’t be disappointed.
