NON-CONFERENCE ACTION CONTINUES The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team continues non-conference action with three games this week. The Owls will host Concordia (N.Y.) on Monday at 7 p.m. , before challenging Holy Family on Friday at 7 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium. On Saturday, the Owls travel to Orangeburg, N.Y. to take on the Dominican Chargers at 1 p.m. A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEKEND’S ACTION The Owls went 0-3 last week in non-conference play. ITS ALL ABOUT THE OFFENSE The Owls finished the week with a combined 0.57 hitting percentage as well as averaged 6.25 kills per set. Junior Kelly Gunneson led the Owls’ offense with a team-high 20 kills (1.67 k/s) and 33 digs (2.75 d/s). ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE Junior Morgan Carman finished with a total of 41 digs (3.42 d/s) while the team avergaed 11.2 digs per set. On the net, the Owls outblocked their opponents 29-25 and recorded 1.42 blocks per set. FRESHMAN SUCCESS Freshman Sean Taylor led the Owls’ defense last week with seven blocks as well as chipped in with 11 kills and five service aces. Freshman Alexandria Jurgens also had a strong week for the Owls as she registered 12 kills, four service aces, 14 digs and six blocks. Currently, Jurgens leads the team with 17 blocks and ranks third with 25 kills. TEAM LEADERS After last week, Nicole Hauser leads the team both in kills (40) and in digs (20). Junior Taylor Carlson continues to lead the Owls with 86 sets while freshman Alexandria Nimz ranks second with 66 assits. PAIR OF OWLS EARN OWLS Morgan Carman and Nicole Hauser were both selected to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll last week for their play two weeks ago. Hauser also earned National Guard Athlete of the Week. DOUBLE TROUBLE Nicole Hauser recorded her first double-double of the sesaon for the Owls with a 20 kill and 15 assist performance against

ALL-TIME VERSUS CONCORDIA (N.Y.) The Clippers hold a 7-5 edge in the all-time series with the Owls. ALL-TIME VERSUS HOLY FAMILY SCSU leads the all-time series with the Tigers by a 3-2 margin. ALL-TIME VERSUS DOMINICAN (N.Y.) SCSU has a 7-0 edge in the all-time series with the Chargers. O’CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN Juniors Morgan Carman and Kelly Gunneson will serve as team captains for the Owls this fall. IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL The Owls were selected to finish 10th according to the Northeast-10 Conference coaches’ poll. LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR The Owls posted their sixth consecutive winning season during the 2013 campaign and closed the year with 17 wins. SCSU also narrowly missed out on a bid to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. EIGHT IS GREAT The Owls have eight student-athletes returning from last year’s team, including Morgan Carman, Taylor Carlson, Kelly Gunneson and Nicole Hauser, all of whom have seen time as starters in their careers. OWLS WELCOME NINE NEWCOMERS The Owls welcome 10 student-athletes to the team this year: Carly Balskus, Jasmin Barrett, Emily Carver, Alexandria Jurgens, Taylor Macdowell, Alexandra Nimz, Alisha Noble, Haley Samuelson, Sean Taylor and Briauna Tutwiler. GUNNESON NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM Kelly Gunneson was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team for her work in the classroom and on the court last fall. To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.

MCVEY EARNS ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS Senior Lauren McVey received year-end honors from the Northeast-10 Conference, as voted on by the league’s coaches. McVey was named to the Third-Team for the second consecutive season. ON DECK The Owls are back in action on Sept. 23 when the team opens up Northeast-10 Conference action against Pace University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
