[email protected] Dear Parents, The summer reading book for in-coming 6th graders in Enriched ELA is called, The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T. Nelson. Here is a short excerpt: Life in a quiet suburban town changes drastically for Lisa and her younger brother, Todd when they survive a deadly plague that has swept across the earth. For some inexplicable reason, everyone older than 12 is dead. Now Lisa and Todd must find a way to stay alive in a very dangerous world. Students are responsible for having the book read by the first day of school. It is interesting and will keep your child engaged. There is not a project due then. They will have extension activities and lessons designed to enrich their understanding of the book in the first several weeks of school. The book is not expensive and can be bought online or at any book store. Be careful to get the regular edition, not the graphic novel. Why do we have a summer reading assignment? There are a number of reasons. It helps our advanced programs remain competitive with similar courses in other schools. Also, the novels we choose are tied to course goals and allow teachers to “hit the ground running” the first day of school, promoting higher level thinking skills and rigor in classroom instruction. We all know education is demanding more of our children. We have to be pro-active in providing the best enrichment, and summer reading is a great way to begin.
