LAST TIME OUT- WVSU DOWNS KSU 35-23 Kentucky State University football dropped its non-conference slate against West Virginia State University at Alumni Stadium, 35-23. Sophomore running back Brett Sylve had another solid offensive performance with 24 carries for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Michael Nero had a huge 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to begin the second half as the Thorobreds continue to be a nightmare on special teams. Sophomore cornerback C.J. Toney was a bright spot on defense with a team-high nine tackles. Senior cornerback Ryan Luckett had the lone turnover for the Thorobreds as he picked off the Yellow Jackets’ quarterback while notching three tackles.

2016 UPSET OF MILES

Kentucky State University football snatched a dramatic 28-24 win over SIAC foe Miles College snapping a six-game losing streak to the Golden Bears during the homecoming at Alumni Stadium. Deep in their end zone, MC bobbled a handoff with 2:10 left in the game allowing senior defensive lineman Nick Beckhum to dive on the ball to score what would be the gamewinning touchdown. Freshman quarterback Jules St. Ge rushed for a team-high 117 yards while throwing for 76 more and a touchdown.

HISTORIC RUN IN 2016

The 2016 season proved to be one to remember for KSU as head coach John L. and his staff led the Thorobreds to their first ever SIAC West Division Championship. The 4-7 record may not show much, but 2016 provided multiple accolades including a win dramatic win against #5 ranked Tuskegee University on the road, SIAC yearly awards with the coach of the year and freshman of the year, and the first Thorobred to record over 100 tackles in a season in over two decades.

ISN’T THAT SPECIAL

Throughout head coach John L. Smith’s 40 years as a college football he has been deemed a “genius” when it comes to special teams. In 2017, his special teams attacks have garnished more praise as the Thorobreds have scored four special teams touchdowns in the first six games of the season. Those scores include three kickoff returns for touchdowns and one punt return for a touchdown. In 2016, KSU did not return a touchdown on a kick return or a punt but recorded two blocked punts, two blocked field goals, and one extra point. In 2017, KSU has yet to produce a blocked punt or field goal attempt.

SIAC WEEKLY AWARDS AND KSU

Seven Thorobreds were named to the SIAC All-Preseason teams, ranking second among SIAC squads. As the season has played out, KSU has added to its conference award tally by picking up three weekly awards in the first six weeks of the year. Sophomore running back Brett Sylve was named Newcomer of the Week in week three, junior kicker Turner Warren was named Special Teams Player of the Week in week 4, and as of this week, Sylve has been named the SIAC Offensive Player of the Week.

JONES WITH NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

Rodriquez Jones was named to the Black College Football Player of the Year watch list by the Black College Football Hall of Fame in early August. Since arriving at the Capitol City as a transfer from Hampton University, Jones made his presence known. During his junior season, he picked up 75 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, and 4.5 sacks.

JOHN L. SMITH-- 2ND SEASON AT KSU (5-12) 156-124 (.557) -- 24TH SEASON AS A HEAD COACH John L. Smith took over as head coach of the Kentucky State football program in December 2015. In his first season, Smith led KSU to a historical campaign, notching the program’s first ever SIAC West Division Championship and a spot in the conference championship game. The Thorobreds finished the season 4-7 with monumental back-to-back nail bitting wins against Miles College and #5 Tuskegee University. The win against the Golden Tigers was the first win by KSU against a nationally ranked top five opponent, since joining the NCAA Division II rankings in 1988. At the conclusion of the season, six Thorobreds were named to the AllConference squad while Smith was named the SIAC Coach of the Year. Before his time with KSU, Smith spent three seasons at Division II Fort Lewis College, where he inherited a team that had been 0-10 in 2012 and posted a 7-4 record this year, equaling the program’s best record in 40 years. Prior to his time at Fort Lewis, Smith served as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas from 2009-11 before serving as the team’s head coach for one season in 2012. He also spent four seasons at Michigan State, where he went 22-26 from 2003-06 and won Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2003. In addition to the Big Ten Coach of the Year award, Smith was a national finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award in 2000. He has made 12 postseason bowl or playoff appearances, and he is one of just 19 coaches in collegiate football history to take three different schools to bowl games. Before his time at Michigan State, Smith went 41-21 at Louisville from 1998-2002, a stretch that included five straight winning seasons, five straight bowl appearances, and two conference championships. Smith also has head coaching stops at Utah State University as well as the University of Idaho, where he went 53-21 from 1989-94 and left as the school’s winningest head coach. An Idaho Falls native, Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Mathematics from Weber State University, where he was a linebacker and quarterback in his collegiate playing days. He also holds a Master of Science in Physical Education from the University of Montana. In addition to his head coaching experience, Smith has served in various assistant coaching roles at Idaho, Weber State, and Montana, as well as with the University of Nevada, University of Wyoming, Washington State University, and the St. Louis Rams.

ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS

At the beginning of 2016 fall camp, upwards of 100 student-athletes walked on to the practice field of head coach John L. Smith’s first season with KSU football. Following a successful first season where the Thorobreds reached new heights, the start of the 2017 camp saw numbers excel past 140 student-athletes vying for an opportunity to take the field on Saturdays at Alumni Stadium. Going into the opening game of the 2017 season, over 63 student athletes help make up the roster that was not on the 2016 active roster. Of those 63 players, 47 of them are true freshmen, including six others who will be red shirted.

Welcome and Welcome Back

Along with several new names on the field, the Thorobreds welcome a few familiar names and two new ones on the sidelines in 2017. Joining the football staff as the assistant head coach and secondary coach is Wade Green. Green was the defensive coordinator at the United States Military Preparatory School from 2009-2016. Another new name will be tight ends coach Tobijah Hughley. Football fans of the Commonwealth may remember Hughley as a member of the University of Louisville football team from 2013-2016. Two familiar names to the coaching staff are running backs coach Matthew Amburgey and graduate assistant Ray Malone. Both Amburgey and Malone are graduates of KSU and former players. Malone was a part of the 2016 West Division Championship team and was named the Most Valuable Player for the Thorobreds in the conference championship game.
