Berkeley, Calif. Golden Bears

After a successful start to the season at Edwards Stadium, the Cal women’s soccer team looks to keep its momentum rolling on the road, visiting San Francisco on Friday evening and UC Davis on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears (2-0-0, 0-0-0 Pac-12) will head across the Bay Bridge on Friday, taking on the Dons (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WCC) at 7 p.m. PT at Negoesco Stadium. Cal’s road weekend continues on Sunday, squaring off against UC Davis (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Big West) at 1 p.m. PT at Aggie Soccer Stadium. At 2-0-0, the Golden Bears are off to their best start since 2014, when they started the season 6-0-0. However, this weekend marks the first road test for the Bears, who went 5-3-2 in away matches last season, including a 2-2-1 mark in non-conference play. Cal opened the 2017 season with a pair of 2-1 victories at home, besting UC Irvine on Friday evening before upending No. 24 Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore striker Abi Kim paced the Bears with three goals on the weekend, registering her first career multi-goal game with a brace against the Anteaters. The 2016 Pac-12 All-Freshman selection continued her production against the Broncos, tying the match in the 80th minute off a feed from junior Miranda Nild and drawing a foul to set up the game-winning penalty kick. Redshirt senior Kelly Fitzgerald, Cal’s top returning scorer from the 2016 season, was automatic from the spot, burying the penalty in the 89th minute to secure the victory for the Golden Bears. For her efforts over the opening weekend, Kim was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week. Defensively, the Bears held their opponents to just 14 shots over the weekend - six of which were on target - and conceded only one goal in the run of play,

BEARS BY THE NUMBERS With three goals in the Golden Bears’ first two games of the season, sophomore striker Abi Kim has already matched her goal scoring total from 2016, when she tallied three goals and three assists as a rookie. Kim’s three goals are tied for the most by any player in the Pac-12 so far this season and rank fifth overall in Division I.

3 4 26 125

Redshirt senior Kelly Fitzgerald converted Cal’s penalty kick in the 89th minute to give the Golden Bears a 2-1 win over Santa Clara, the fourth successful penalty attempt of her career. Fitzgerald, who is the Bears’ leading returning scorer from 2016, is a perfect 4-4 on penalty attempts in her collegiate career. Senior goalkeeper Emily Boyd enters Friday’s match with 26 career shutouts, already the most in Cal women’s soccer history and tied for the 6th-most by any active player in the country. An NSCAA Third-Team All-District selection in 2016, Boyd has a career goals against average of 0.83 and is fourth in program history in saves (220). Cal’s season-opening win over UC Irvine marked the 125th win at Cal for head coach Neil McGuire, giving him the most wins of any head coach in program history. Now in his 11th season as head coach of the Golden Bears, McGuire has an overall record of 126-62-25 at Cal and has led the Bears to the NCAA Tournament every year of his tenure.

San Francisco plays its first home game of the year on Friday, looking to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Texas Tech on Sunday at the New Mexico Soccer Complex in Albuquerque. The Dons conceded a penalty kick in the 105th minute, which the Red Raiders converted, handing San Francisco its first loss of the year. The Dons opened the 2017 with a 2-1 victory over New Mexico, behind goals from Samantha Jehnings and Sonja Giraud. Giraud finished second on the team in scoring last season with five goals while Jehnings, a WCC All-Freshman selection in 2015, is back after missing all of 2016 due to injury. The Dons were picked to finish sixth in the West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Friday’s match will be the 23rd meeting all-time between the Dons and Golden Bears. Cal holds a 17-3-2 advantage overall in the series and is unbeaten in the last 12 meetings between the teams, including a 4-1 victory last season at Edwards Stadium.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES

After suffering a pair of one-goal defeats on the road, the Aggies look to get back on track on their home turf, hosting Portland on Friday before Sunday’s tilt against the Golden Bears. The Aggies dropped their season opener to defending National Champion USC, 2-1. Senior Mandy McKeegan tallied her first career goal to cut the deficit to one, curling in a free kick against the Women of Troy. The Aggies dropped another close decision on Sunday, falling to San Diego State, 1-0. UC Davis returns 10 letterwinners from last season’s squad that finished fifth in the Big West. Sunday will be the 12th meeting between the Golden Bears and the Aggies. Cal is unbeaten in their previous 11 meetings, boasting 10-0-1 record in the series. The teams met last season in Berkeley, resulting in a 4-0 victory for the Golden Bears.

NEXT UP

Following Sunday’s game at UC Davis, the Bears will return to Edwards Stadium, hosting Texas on September 1 at 2 p.m. PT and Long Beach State at 4 p.m. on September 3. Both matches will be double-headers with the Cal men’s soccer team, who face Northeastern at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Creighton at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

WHAT SOPHOMORE SLUMP?

Sophomore striker Abi Kim scored three goals in 150 minutes of action this weekend and set up the game-winning penalty kick against Santa Clara, as the Cal women’s soccer team opened the year with a pair of 2-1 victories. Kim’s three goals are tied for the most by any player in Division I so far this season and have already matched her total goal output from 2016. For her performance over the weekend, Kim was named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week and earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. This is the first career Pac-12 Weekly honor for Kim and the first for any Cal player since Emily Boyd was named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week on October 11, 2016. For her stellar performance this weekend, Kim was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.

CALL IT A COMEBACK

The Golden Bears scored twice in the final 10 minutes of action in Sunday’s win over No. 24 Santa Clara. Kim tied the game at 1-1 with a finish in the 80th minute before Kelly Fitzgerald netted the game-winning penalty kick in the 89th minute. Only one of Cal’s goals this season has come in the first half, with the remaining three goals scored in the 69th minute or later.
