Second Grade News Update for the week of October 14 Announcements
Please refer to the handout about Engrade! In it you will find out how to access our Second Grade Wiki page that contains information about our class, homework, schedule, updates, & more. A letter was sent with your child yesterday regarding Raz-Kids. Please let me know if you have questions about it. Hassan was Student of the Week this week! He is a die-hard Everton fan, has an amazing laugh, and likes to collect shells. We enjoyed getting to know him more this week. To help keep our classroom germ-free, we would like to have a few bottles of hand-sanitizer. Any donations welcome! Please allow your child to enter the class alone, hang their bags and get ready for the morning (turn in homework, etc) by themselves. We are creating a morning routine where students are learning to be responsible and more independent. o Students are reminded daily to take care of their belongings such as jackets, hats, watches, toys, etc. They are solely responsible for the clothing they wear to school, and the things that they bring from home.
Language Arts
Science
We started our reading program by reading Arthur’s Reading Race. We read for comprehension and fluency, and learned different story elements such as understanding the problem/solution of the story. If you are reading to your child, discuss the problem/solution of the story with them. In writing, students have started writing about their favorite place. We began the writing process by creating a web to help with brainstorming for ideas, and then wrote a rough draft. Next week we will look at editing the rough draft to write a final copy. In spelling, students are studying words with endings that rhyme. In addition to their spelling list every week, students study a particular pattern.
This week we planted a mini ‘lawn’ and are waiting to see it grow. Our Brassica plants are flowering now and hopefully next week we will get to act as bees and help with pollination. Students are also learning how a lot of the food we eat is a part of a plant (leaves-spinach, roots-carrots, stems-asparagus, flower-broccoli, etc.). Make connections to this concept over dinner! Over the weekend, please help your child collect the seeds of the fruit that they eat and bring it to school.
Math We started our unit on subtraction. Students practiced subtracting everything (6-6) and nothing (6-0), subtracting using the number line, and subtracting to find out how many fewer or how many more. It is a concept that needs lots of practice, so they will be coming home daily with practice sheets.
