Dear Second Grade Parents, I hope you all enjoyed Thanksgiving with your family and friends. I enjoyed listening to the students last week tell me what they are thankful for in their lives. I hope all of you received your child’s acrostic poems that they made on Wednesday. I had them think of words they associate with Thanksgiving and create a personal poem. This week the students will have a test in Science based on the chapter about matter. On Friday the students will have their Spelling test. Please make sure to have your child use the flashcards on Engrade to prepare for these upcoming tests. This week the students will look at a new set of spelling words. These words are open syllables and words with prefixes. In Religion, the students will work on their last chapter in the unit based on preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This chapter focuses on how we say we are sorry. Also, please remember on Friday the students will be tested on the Act of Contrition. Your child needs to have this prayer memorized by Friday. This will be taken as a test grade. After this week, we will move to our chapter that focuses on Advent and the preparation of Christmas. In English, the students will continue to learn about singular and plural possessive nouns and compound words. In Reading we will work on the F.A.S.T concepts 16-19. We will work on “Most Kind Old Words” and long vowels. This week we will begin learning cursive writing. I know many of the students are excited, yet a little nervous about the thought that they will eventually be writing in cursive. We will focus on two letters per week normally. Therefore, we will begin writing in all cursive towards February. In Math we will continue to work on using mental addition. We will work on adding on a hundred chart and adding multiples of ten.

Welcome  to  Mrs.Elliott’s   Grade  2   November  28,  2011

Also, please remember the students now have taken all their timed tests on all the factors. Therefore, you will see all the facts mixed up, and the number of problems will increase. Please make sure your child is using the websites I’ve supplied to you, and the flashcards to continue to practice these basic facts. We will begin looking at our next unit in Social Studies this week. This next unit is about working together in the community. We will look at choosing goods and services and how countries trade and move goods. Please make sure you’re checking Engrade weekly for recently uploaded grades. Also, to see if I have sent you a message. This week the Santa Secret Shop begins on Tuesday. Also, Friday is the Christmas Concert. Please make sure your child is in the 2nd grade classroom at 6:45 wearing dress clothes. Please make sure your child is not wearing jeans or athletic shoes.
