About the Program: Soccer for Success is the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s free soccer-based afterschool program that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for children in underresourced, urban communities. It is currently in operation in 25 cities across the country and serves more than 16,000 children. The program started in Denver in the fall of 2012 with nine schools and 675 students. During 2013-2014 the program served 1,200 students in 22 Denver and Aurora Public Schools and in the 2014-2015 school year, it will continue expanding to serve 2,800 students in more than 35 schools and recreation centers.

Colorado Rapids Youth Soccer Club is seeking coach mentors to implement the Soccer for Success curriculum in participating Denver and Aurora public schools during after school hours. Core Components of the program include: Physical Activity: Children participate in 90-minute sessions at least three days a week to ensure they receive the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity. Mentorship: Each site is staffed by caring coaches who serve as mentors that are invested in the successful development of each child. Mentors stress the importance of doing well in school and avoiding negative influences such as drugs, alcohol, and violence. Nutrition: Staff deliver nutrition education from the Soccer for Success curriculum which was developed in accordance with the CDC’s healthy eating module. Staff also teach the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices and maintaining healthy eating habits. Family Engagement: Soccer for Success strives to turn parents and family members into advocates who reinforce the program's teachings by applying them in their homes.
