London’s business registration rate is 85 per cent above that of Hertfordshire, the next highest ranked LEP, and more than twice the rate for England as a whole. All 33 local authorities in London bettered the national registration rate, ranging from 26.6 new registrations for every 10,000 residents in Sutton to 1,909 in the City of London. More than a third (36.6 per cent) of all new registrations in England were in London, where the 41,312 new companies was well ahead of the 6,691 registered in the South East LEP and the 5,891 in Greater Manchester. The local authorities with the highest registrations are presented in table 2 below, with London accounting for eight of the top ten places and 16 of the top 20. Watford (7th), Warrington (8th), Hertsmere (Hertfordshire, 13th) and Poole (14th) are the best placed local authorities outside London. Manchester was the best placed of the core cities ranking 24th, ahead of Birmingham (35th), Bristol (61st), Leeds (64th) and Liverpool (79th). Nottingham (116th), Sheffield (163rd) and Newcastle (166th) failed to match England’s registration rate. Only 80 of England’s 326 local authorities bettered the national rate of new business registration. Registration rates across the country are presented in the map at the end of this bulletin, with performance by LEP shown in table 3.
