Dovelands Primary School Newsletter Fundraising for Nepal To raise money in support of UNICEF's response to the terrible earthquake in Nepal, on the afternoon of Friday 22nd May the UNICEF Ambassadors will be holding an 'indoor carnival'- a range of fun games and challenges to take part in. The Ambassadors had the idea of raising money to help as well as to hold the carnival. They have designed and made the games themselves and will invite each class in turn to 'try their luck'. A small charge will be made to play the games (between 20p-40p) so please start saving pennies now!
Warning Zone Throughout the day each Year 6 class visited this amazing centre where real life situations are brought to life to allow children the chance to think about the risks they may take when out alone and how these can be affected by peer pressure. It is a valuable experience which we look forward to repeating next year when they will have also opened a ‘cyber zone’ about internet safety. (Mrs Westmoreland) The Warning Zone was a great experience as we could learn how to stay safe by going through many different zones, all teaching us new things by doing different activities. For example one of the Zones was a mock house fire; we went through a door into a smoky room and crawled out into a garden. It was brilliant because it will help us make good decisions when we are older. We really enjoyed the Warning Zone as it taught me to be safe in a fun way. It was one of our favourite school trips. Fame at the reading convention...
Email addresses please We will be improving our electronic communication, with emails to parents finally running as soon as possible. By the autumn term you will no longer get a paper copy of the newsletter. The newsletter will be sent via email, and will be available on the website. Please email the office with your child’s name so we can build up our database of email addresses for parents.
A reading convention was held at library services and our dragon's egg (used to inspire writing in Years 1 and 2) has been displayed as good practice for all teachers to admire.
Year 5 writing project Year 5 have written some outstanding pieces of writing following our recent Novel Study book on ‘Window’ by Jeannie Baker. Following the book’s focus on how humans affect the environment and how nature is threatened by urbanisation, we applied this to our school to create a fictitious scenario whereby our precious ,award-winning garden and historic tree would have to be removed to make way for a sports pitch. For those of you who were convinced by the rumours, please be reassured that this is not the case. The pitch will be installed during the summer but both the tree and garden are safe. As you may imagine, the Year 5 children responded exceptionally well to this –the writing they have produced is superb having benefitted from a ‘real-life’ issue that affects them personally.
