Today I will mentally count back to find the difference.

Vocabulary Number line:

Teacher Resources Considerations: This lesson models how to count back by 1 and 2, but you can teach counting back other numbers.

When you subtract, you move to the left on the number line.

To further assist students struggling with this concept, consider using a number line. The goal is to have students mentally be able to count back.

Steps: Count back: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Difference: 9-5=4

1. Put the greater number of the equation in your head. 2. Count back the amount of the second number in the equation. 3. Find the difference.
