TANGERINE
Here’s how to peel and section a fresh tangerine. Use as a snack, in salads, and as dessert. No need to wash since you will peel the tangerine. ______1.
Get tangerine. Get cutting board. Get knife. Get a fresh tangerine, a clean cutting board and a clean, sharp knife.
______2.
Careful! Cut off end. Put the tangerine on to the cutting board and, using the knife, cut off the stem end of the tangerine so that you end up with a fairly round, very thin piece of peel about the size of a quarter. Try to not cut into any of the tangerine, only the peel. This is tricky and requires practice.
______3.
Pull off peel. Using your one hand, hold the whole tangerine. Using your other hand, push your thumb under the peel (at the end where you have cut) and start loosening the peel at the same time you start to pull it up and off of the tangerine. The peel will easily come up and off in bits and pieces. Throw away the peel.
______4.
Loosen tangerine sections. Using your one hand, hold the whole tangerine. Using your other hand and fingers, slightly push into the middle of the tangerine at one of the ends where the tangerine sections come together. This will start to loosen up the tangerine sections so that you can go on to the next step.
______5.
Pull apart sections. Using one of your hands, hold the whole tangerine. Using your other hand, gently but firmly, pull apart the tangerine into two pieces. Then, using both hands and your fingers, continue to gently pull apart all the sections of the tangerine until completely divided.
